The Perkins Pediatric Clinic 'Caring for your kids, that’s ALL we do.'

08/08/2025

Unfortunately I am unable to reach each person due to the number of families that entrusted Dr Perkins with their child's care. Please know that we would love to say how much we loved and cared for your babies. The office is currently open from 10-3, closed for lunch from 12-1. You will need to choose what provider you would like to transfer to and either sign a release at their office or you can come here to sign the release, whichever is easier for you.....Again, please accept my apologies for not reaching out and pray for us as we navigate this next chapter. Honestly we are all at a loss....... Please keep his family both home and work in your prayers....and all the patients that he saw....

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden loss of Dr. Michael Perkins on July 25, 2025. The office will be closed next week to give office staff time to grieve and process this terrible loss. We will update this page once the office has reopened so that parents may sign a records request to have your child’s records transferred to the provider of your choice. Please be patient as we all navigate through this process. Please keep his family and work family in your prayers for the days ahead.

TOPIC TODAY: DETRIMENTAL ENERGY DRINKS!

Energy drinks are heavily marketed to children and teens with claims of boosting energy, enhancing focus, and improving athletic performance. However, these claims are largely unsubstantiated and overshadowed by significant health risks, particularly for developing bodies.

Effects:
* High Caffeine Content: Energy drinks contain alarmingly high levels of caffeine, often far exceeding recommended daily limits for adolescents. This can lead to:
* Cardiovascular Issues: Increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, heart palpitations, irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), and even, in severe cases, cardiac arrest. The developing cardiovascular system of young people is particularly vulnerable.
* Nervous System Effects: Anxiety, jitters, nervousness, restlessness, tremors, headaches, and dizziness. They can also exacerbate existing mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
* Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, reduced sleep quality, and disrupted sleep patterns, leading to daytime fatigue and a vicious cycle of reliance on energy drinks.
* Dependency and Withdrawal: Regular consumption can lead to caffeine dependence, resulting in withdrawal symptoms like headaches, irritability, and nausea if intake is reduced.
* Impact on Brain Development: There is emerging evidence that excessive caffeine intake in adolescents can interfere with proper brain development, including synapse growth and cognitive functions like learning and memory.
* Excessive Sugar Intake: Many energy drinks are loaded with added sugars, contributing to:
* Obesity and Weight Gain: A significant contributor to excess caloric intake.
* Type 2 Diabetes Risk: Increased risk due to high sugar consumption.
* Dental Problems: Tooth decay and enamel erosion.
* Other Stimulants and Additives: Beyond caffeine, energy drinks often contain other legal stimulants like guarana (which contains its own caffeine), taurine, and L-carnitine. The combined effects of these substances are not fully understood, but they can amplify the risks associated with caffeine. Taurine, in particular, may disrupt brain development during adolescence.
* Dehydration: Despite their "hydration" claims, energy drinks can lead to dehydration, especially when consumed during physical activity, as caffeine is a diuretic.
* Risky Behaviors: Studies show a correlation between energy drink consumption and increased risk-taking behaviors, including the misuse of alcohol and illicit drugs, particularly when energy drinks are mixed with alcohol.

Claims vs. Reality:
While energy drinks may provide a temporary feeling of alertness, this is largely due to the high stimulant content and is often followed by a "crash" that leaves individuals feeling more fatigued. There is little to no scientific evidence supporting claims of improved athletic performance or enhanced muscle strength. The transient "boost" comes at a significant cost to a child's or teen's developing body and mind. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical organizations strongly advise against the consumption of energy drinks by children and adolescents due to these profound health risks.
