In October, I completed my fourth year in practice as Bright Start Therapeutics. This grass roots practice was made possible by the vision to provide quality OT services with an organic approach to treatment. Bright Start is a place where families feel both seen and heard. We learn from each other. We walk this journey together, hand in hand.

Below is a sweet video put together before Bright Start opened its doors. My beautiful friend brought her son to play and my youngest joined us too. While the office looks nothing like this now, I am reminded of where I began and the gratitude I feel to those who made this possible.

Thank you to Building Bodeez Fitness Center for providing me with space and welcoming me without hesitation. None of this would exist without you.

Thank you to my family for their love and support, especially on the hard days.

Thank you to my clients and other practitioners for believing in me and my work. My gratitude is truly immeasurable.

Thank you God for carrying me through and guiding my way, especially when I doubt myself.

Shout it from the rooftops! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

As we get ready to start fresh with a new year, these are some things to leave behind for the well being of Autistic children everywhere:

•Compliance-based therapies
•Ableist attitudes
•Services designed to fix deficits
•Expecting neurotypical social skills
•Ignoring goals for self-advocacy and autonomy
•Writing therapy and educational goals without accommodations
•Prioritizing speech/not honoring all modes of communication

The Autistic neurotype is a different yet valid way of being human.

Autistic children are not broken or defective versions of neurotypical kids.

Any services we provide to Autistic children should be accepting, affirming, and inclusive.

This is the Peg Creations Light Board by Lakeshore Learning. I absolutely love the design of this toy. No paper pages are necessary, nor do you have to plug it in to use it. Powered by AA batteries, this light board allows for endless creativity, fun, and learning. The pegs are also nicely shaped, and come with their own carrying case.

This activity can be done whether lying on the floor, sitting, kneeling, or standing. It can be done individually, or a shared experience with others.

As always, please provide direct supervision with the young child to ensure safety.

She brings such good stuff to the table. It’s real, and hits home on so many levels, for families and clinicians alike.

Some people bring their kids to OT and hope that I'm going to give 'em back a different kid.

I'm not, but I might give 'em a more empowered kid and a list of adjustments that could be made. 😊

Hi! I’m Erin, owner of Bright Start Therapeutics, and pediatric Occupational Therapist. If you are in search of a grass roots practice that provides unique, neuro-affirming treatment, I’m your gal.

What makes me unique? I provide customized care that rejects a cookie cutter approach. Neuro-affirming treatment takes time and effort. It stretches us as clinicians to be honest. We must learn to truly listen to the children and families we service. It takes practice as we transition more deeply to a collaborative coaching approach versus one of consultation.
