Follow up on our friend, Bo! After a few sessions of SomaYoga, Bo was able to learn that he was overbreathing and not fully exhaling, often even holding his breath. He learned how to shift that by daily breath re-education (resetting his resting breath, not using a breath practice.) He learned a few Somatic movements to help release the muscles of his hip and his outer ribcage and upper back, that were overworking (in the same pattern as when he injured himself as a teenager.) Then he was able to learn how to activate muscles on the opposite side of the ones that were overactive, and stated, "I have been told for years that I needed to strengthen these, but I never could. I didn't know that I had to learn to let go of the stronger ones first!" (This is a common theme - often we're told we need to strengthen certain muscles, BUT if our brain in stuck in a pattern that overworks somewhere else, it's nearly impossible! Lastly, Bo was taught to "rewire" how he stands, sits, bends, etc. so that he is moving more equally. There's the rest of Bo's story...... if you heard something that resonates with you, or you have questions, send me a message! I'd love to talk to you about how breath re-education, somatics, and looking at things a big differently might be able to help you too! #

Bo was at his wit's end, but a friend told him about Therapeutic SomaYoga. Bo talked about all of his physical pain, how weird it was, and how much he was struggling. He was told that the first things SomaYoga is going to look at is how he's breathing and how he's holding his posture - what "patterns of tension" are showing up. Then he will get some practices to help his nervous system, through his breath, and to release muscles that are overworking all the time, to help find better balance. He thought that was a little weird at first, but also said, "well, I do have a lot of stress at work right now." After finding that he was holding his breath a lot and breathing with his upper chest muscles and not fully exhaling, he was able to find a connection to his diaphragm and breathe slower which helped him feel more relaxed. He also stated that the pain in his shoulder blades wasn't as bad, just by changing his breathing pattern. He then learned that he stands and sits in a way that he is engaging the muscles of the inner leg and glutes on the side that he injured. Once he was able to release these muscles, as well as his mid and upper back muscles, he didn't feel so much tension and pain in his hip. What he did was nervous system work through his breath and from somatics - learning to tune into and release unconscious tension patterns. He said, "this feels kind of weird, but it also makes a lot of sense!"
Tune in soon to hear the rest of the story....

Bo's pain is continuing to get worse. He's doing the physical things he thinks will help, but not getting any relief. See the next post for what he does next!

Well, Bo's hip and upper back pain wasn't getting better. He went to the providers he had gone to before, and they helped him a bit, but he was still having pain that bothered him throughout the day, and was keeping him up at night now. He couldn't figure out why "all the sudden" this pain showed up and wouldn't go away and in fact, felt like it was getting worse with short periods of feeling a bit better. All he knew was he didn't have time to deal with it - he had a ton to do at work and felt like he was way behind and getting farther due to this pain! He felt like he was rushed in everything he did and felt like he wasn't getting anything done well. He thought if he just did the exercises with more weight and stretched a little farther, maybe that would help. So he did them over his lunch hour so he wouldn't have to take up more of his time to work. Unfortunately, the pain was still there, waking him up at night, and even feeling worse at night most of the time. He was now getting less and less sleep.

We learned about an old injury in the second part of our story last week. Why does that matter? Let's see what happens in our next post today!

" I took the 500hr training program to enhance my skills and I got SO MUCH more. I have to say I had absolutely no idea what I was going to walk away with. What a gift. The depth of learning, the teaching faculty, the training materials, the dynamics of a cohort... it all changed me. I am forever grateful!" - a TT500 grad from YN

Last week, we saw how dropping something on your foot caused physical pain in the foot, and over the next weeks, the foot felt better. What we didn't know, was that this person (we'll call him Bo) had a previous injury to his hip on the opposite side, when he was a high school football player. He had torn the labrum - surgery wasn't recommended, but he couldn't play and had to miss the last part of his football season. He hadn't thought about that injury for a long time. Even though his foot felt better, he was getting pain in his hip again, as well as his upper back, between his shoulder blades. He did some of the stretches and exercises he knew helped in the past, but it didn't seem to help.
To be continued......

It's strange to talk about yourself sometimes... but Tyler Kamerman made it easy. He talks to people about pursuing their passions. He was also able to talk about his experiences with SomaYoga. Recently he chatted with 3 other health and wellness practitioners and me! Check out our conversation (and his other pidcasts!) There's great things about pursuing your passion, and also hard things. https://pod.link/1583654347/episode/N2UwY2JkOGQtYjkwYy00YWJmLTg5NjItMzFkZTlmNzFhYzQz?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwMDMXNleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHvNrR9XawRNHpP_8KeNyKi8Y431h62iikDB2t4crPi9GsbtOfea0qcGz4Byj_aem_yfM9D3twN7gTxclkWkSPrw
