Working on Executive Functioning skills doesn't have to be complicated or boring!

The best way to address this area is through intrinsically motivating activities, such as play 🤸🎨♟

I've highlighted a 3 step process that was used during an OT session to promote a client's ability to plan and complete multi-step activities.

1. Make a Plan: This can be a planned discussed out loud, drawn in a picture, and written down in steps. In this case, the plan was drawn as a picture.

2. Follow the Plan: Do the activity! It's okay if the activity doesn't go as planned, you can reflect on it in the final step

3. Reflect: After completing the plan, this is a good opportunity to reflect on how the planned worked. Were any changes made to the plan? Did any obstacles pop up during the plan? Did it take longer or shorter than expected?

Being able to regulate your energy level means more than staying in a calm state 🧘‍♂️

Energy Regulation should look like ⬆️up-regulating and ⬇️down-regulating your energy level throughout the day in order to better match the activity at hand.

In order to self regulate our energy levels we need to
⚡️ Know where our energy level is currently at (👋 interoception)
⚡️ Determine what energy level would be best for the activity
⚡️ Take steps to match the energy required for the activity by maintaining, up-regulating, or down-regulating our energy level

Big stress responses rarely come out of nowhere💥💣

We just need to know what to look for 🔍

Here are 10 signs you may observe in your child when they are experiencing nervous system dysregulation.

1. Seeking Out More Control
2. Change in Voice or Language
3. Increased Demands
4. Decreased Attention
5. Increase in “No’s” / Refusals
6. Moving More
7. Being Extra Silly
8. Negotiating
9. Spacing Out
10. Looking Flushed or Sweaty

By recognizing these signs we can better help a child stay regulated and help avoid big fight, flight, freeze, or fawn stress responses. ✨

Did you know you can use your insurance for in-home and virtual occupational therapy?
🔹In-home and virtual OT sessions are billed just like a clinic based therapy session

🔹We are in-network providers with BCBS Illinois PPO and Blue Choice plans

🔹Not only is it more convenient to have the occupational therapist come to your home but it also allows you to address what's really important to you!

🔹Your in-home or virtual OT is going to be able to immediately jump in and help address those meaningful activities in the comfort of your own home.

🔹By working with our clients in their homes we are able to work on the regulation skills, executive functioning skills and motor skills needed for daily activities like eating, dressing, hygiene, morning and nighttime routines, or household tasks like cleaning, cooking and laundry.

Send us a message if you're interested in learning more about our in-home or virtual OT services!

You are never too young or too old to begin learning about your sensory needs, dislikes, and preferences! There's so many benefits to knowing your sensory profile- it is something I wish every neurodivergent individual had access to.

I've outlined 5 of the benefits below ⬇️⬇️

1. Self Advocacy: Recognizing your sensory preferences empowers you to advocate for your needs. Once you know what your sensory system needs in order to feel comfortable and regulated you will then be able to self advocate with friends and family, at school or work, and out in the community

2. Lowers Stress: Continued exposure to uncomfortable sensory input stresses our nervous system. By learning what sensory input is comfortable and uncomfortable you can proactively avoid the uncomfortable sensory input that is perceived as a threat by our autonomic nervous system. This will help lower stress levels.

3. Allows for Individualized Sensory Tools and Strategies: Sensory tools and strategies are not a one size fits all. No two sensory systems are the same! Even within your own sensory system there can be hyper-sensitivity to certain types of sensory input while having hypo-sensitivity or “sensory seeking” to other kinds.

4. Greater Independence: Those not so do-able tasks can become “do-able” once you find the right accommodations to better meet your sensory needs.

5. Improved Decision Making: When you are aware of your sensory needs, you can make more informed choices. For example, you might choose environments, activities, or social interactions that complement your sensory preferences, leading to decisions that are more aligned with your wants and values.

Send us a message if you're interested in exploring your sensory profile with an occupational therapist!
