Many parents carefully create a birth plan — maybe it’s a peaceful waterbirth, a home setting, or a certain type of pain relief. But sometimes, birth takes its own path.

• Studies show only about 1 in 3 births go exactly according to the original plan.
• Around 60–70% of women who plan an intervention-free birth (like waterbirth) still achieve many of their preferences — but flexibility is key.
• The most important outcome isn’t a “perfect” plan… it’s a safe, supported birth and a healthy mom and baby.

When any clinician says that there are no risks with repeat cesareans, they fail to provide what patients need so they can make truly informed decisions. Not to mention: It's factually inaccurate.

That is the point.

This is why the American College of OB/GYN’s national VBAC guidelines has asserted since 2017 that “women attempting TOLAC should be cared for in a level 1 center (ie, one that can provide basic care or higher.)” Yet many are unaware of this recommendation. Many still assert that hospitals must provide special staffing or resources to attend VBAC. That is not the case.

If a hospital attends labors, they get to be prepared for potential emergencies. It is those some protocols that are employed during uterine rupture. No special staffing or resources.

This confusion about special staffing and resources originated from ACOG’s past “immediately available” recommendation.

However, back in 2010, the NIH and ACOG expressed concern over the contraction of VBAC access - and the expansion of VBAC bans which “require” repeat cesareans - as a result of how the immediately available recommendation was interpreted across the country.

All of this comes down to fear. It is the biggest barrier to VBAC. And the number one way to counter that fear is to learn the facts. What the medical evidence and national guidelines actually say about VBAC safety, candidacy, monitoring, response, factors that increase and decrease risks and odds, etc.
