“I think the overall, overarching advice is to go slow, not treat your body like you were 25, but—instead—really pay attention to things that hurt. If your body's telling you that something is bothering you, really listen,” said Dr. Rispoli. “That said, there’s a tendency for people to become more sedentary [as they age] and feel more limited and down. Exercise not only has the power to bring people together, but it also keeps us moving when we need it most.”

When something hurts in your body, the very idea of exercise can seem impossible. But inactivity can quickly lead to a cycle of more pain, lost of physical function, and decreased motivation to get and stay moving. Safe and appropriate exercise can help address some of the underlying causes of pain, including excess body weight, strength imbalances, and poor alignment. Exercise also positively affects some neurotransmitters and receptors involved in the pain response.

Taking activities of daily living for granted is something most of us take for granted. It's why it’s important to understand that many of them depend on having enough strength, flexibility, and balance to do them safely, and for many years. Just getting in and out of the car, lifting a bag of groceries, mowing the lawn, walking the dog, and opening a jar of pickles each requires mobility and coordination. When it comes to living in your own home on your own terms, the time you devote to exercise is time well spent.

“I actually find that my most active patients tend to be in the least amount of pain or at least have the best ability to manage their pain,” Dr. Rispoli (Leia Rispoli, MD, a double-board-certified interventional pain management specialist and physiatrist,) added “Most age-related pain is caused by wear and tear. "Although we can't reverse the aging process, we can definitely help preserve and protect what’s left, or even slow degeneration progression by keeping strong supportive muscles, and keeping an appropriate, healthy weight. Stronger muscles and weight management are two basic and yet key factors that reduce stress on joints and bones, and can definitely help with many age-related pains.”

And as much as the experts have all agreed that exercising as you age benefits not only every body system but your overall quality of life, it doesn't make it easy when you're hurting. Whether from arthritis or other issues, pain can be a barrier to exercise. But as the Former Director on Healthy Aging says, "Having pain is not a free pass to avoid exercise all together."

From the National Council on Aging “The evidence is clear: getting enough exercise, and the right kinds of exercise, can keep you stronger and healthier as you age,” said Susan Stiles, PhD, Former Senior Director of Healthy Aging at NCOA.

"In the past, physical therapy was perceived as a reactionary profession; most people believe physical therapists (PTs) only work with people after they were injured. This misconception overlooks much of the value physical therapists offer the older adult community to keep them safe and independent. PTs are changing their profession to include treatment of injury and education on preventive strategies that reduce injuries altogether." National Council on Aging

We are so proud of our son Joe Quinn. Striving for excellence every day.

Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Joe Quinn, he is our 2025 Firefighter of the 4th Quarter! Fire Chief Ryan Crawford and Quinn's crew surprised him with this award and a Chief's Challenge Coin before live burn exercises this week. 🔥🥳🚒

In the words of his company officer, Lieutenant/Paramedic Luke Lewis, Joe has demonstrated exceptional growth both professionally and personally this past year. His motivation, work ethic, and desire to be a proactive leader are evident in how he carries himself every day.

This year, Quinn obtained his Relief Driver certification, enrolled into the Fire Officer II course series, and stepped into senior firefighter roles, assuming added responsibilities and providing leadership without prompting. He consistently mentors fellow firefighters through meaningful, informal interactions that positively influence crew performance and culture.

Quinn is also a highly engaged contributor with our EMS division, conducting extensive research on key initiatives, which includes three-person rescues and the EMS Shift Educator concept. He proactively shares research to improve operational effectiveness and readiness. His leadership on the medical side of the job also includes precepting new paramedics, demonstrating enthusiasm and a clear passion for teaching.

At Station 3, he spearheads and organizes daily crew physical training each shift, treating workout programming as a critical component of readiness and crew performance. He is consistently seeking opportunities to compete in firefighter fitness competitions outside of our District, and his passion for physical wellness is contagious to those around him.

For these reasons and many more, we are incredibly proud to recognize Firefighter/Paramedic Joe Quinn with this award! Please join us in congratulating him on this honor.
