Dr. Simkin, MD, DFAACAP, is a board certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist who is among a new breed of what is now being referred to as Integrative or Functional Psychiatrists. She is the only psychiatrist certified in both Functional Medicine by the Institute of Functional Medicine and Integrative Psychiatry by the ABIM in Destin.In that capacity, she utilizes many forms of Functional Medicine to find the reason for the disease state rather than just using medications.. Then the family/patient decide which interventions they may want to utilize to match the needs of the patient. Integrative psychiatry allows the family/patient to choose from a variety of interventions which might include meditation and non traditional medications (nutrients, etc.). For instance, low Vitamin D3 levels may prevent a depression from going into remission.
