Unexpected – that’s what injuries usually are.

If you ever find yourself injured and on the way to walk-in care or waiting overnight before seeing a provider, the RICE method is what you can do right away to help relieve pain, limit swelling and speed up healing.

Children who have gone through intense trauma, like abuse or the loss of a loved one, benefit greatly from having safe spaces to play, create and relax in.

Thanks to a gift from Panda Cares, the charity affiliated with Panda Express, through the Sanford Health Foundation, a new safe space with art supplies, toys and more was opened at the Sanford Traumatic Stress Treatment Center and the Sanford Children's CARE Clinic. This room gives children in the Fargo region a place where they can feel comfortable, helping them heal and recover.

A donation of more than $200,000 helped create the Panda Cares Center for Hope inside Sanford Fargo's Traumatic Stress Treatment Center.

In places like Mountain Lake, Minnesota, health care providers try to go the extra mile to support the children of their community, and sometimes all that takes is a good book.

Watch how Susan Goodemote, a nurse practitioner, is doing more to care for local children during their well child visits:

Sue Goodemote, NP, brought the Reach Out and Read program to three Sanford Health clinics. Now every child 0-5 leaves with a new book.

"My parents were told multiple times that I wouldn't survive. I was baptized in the hospital. They never thought I was coming home. Deb was part of that care that made sure that I got to come home and then someday have three babies of my own."

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Deb Koens cared for Josie Folden during her first days of life in 1995. Twenty-eight years later, at the end of 2023, she cared for Josie's third child, Luci, in the same NICU.

"To be able to know that I was fortunate to be able to care for both of them, it kind of makes you feel like this has been a long, successful career," said Koens.

Following nine miscarriages, the Folden family welcomes their third baby and an unexpected reunion in the Sanford USD Medical Center's NICU.

On Wednesday, May 14th Sanford Health Detroit Lakes Lab was awarded the Hero Award for Family. Read the nomination below:

"I would like to nominate the Detroit Lakes Lab Team for the Hero Award for Family. I have had the privilege of working with this amazing group for 15 years now, and I consider each and every one of them family. This group has been through a lot together, all the ups and downs, and they have been there for each other through it all. We have celebrated graduating from college and passing boards for many of our staff. We have also helped celebrate personal occasions like the birth of children, and watching our children and grandchildren graduate high school and get married. We have also celebrated the most amazing opportunity of new life when one of our team received a heart transplant 2 years ago. We have also comforted and supported each other through the loss of loved ones and as one of our team went through breast cancer treatments. And now we are getting ready to say goodbye to another one as she moves back home after caring for her mother for many years. Through all of this, we have always worked to provide the best care for our patients, making sure that we give them the same care that we would give each other and our families. Each one of them provides caring compassionate care to our patients, and strives to provide the best quality lab results. This team exemplifies what it means to be a family, and for that, I proudly nominate them for the Hero Award for Family."

Congratulations to our Senior Director of Operations Breanna Adams, who was named the 2025 Employee of the Year for the Sanford Health network.

Breanna said, "I was quite shocked and honored to receive this award. I would not be getting this award if it wasn’t for the excellent people I get to work with day in and day out, who embody the same principals and culture towards patient care. It takes a team who is hard working, flexible, knowledgeable, empathetic, and willing to work together to achieve a common goal. I am proud to be part of Sanford and most importantly part of all the communities we serve."
