October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is observed every October to raise awareness about domestic violence, honor survivors, and remember those who have lost their lives. DVAM grew out of the "Day of Unity" first conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in 1981.
Ways to get involved
1.Wear purple: Purple is the symbolic color for the domestic violence awareness movement, representing peace, courage, and survival. Many participate in Purple Thursday, held on the third Thursday of October, by wearing purple to show support for survivors.
2.Share information: Use social media to promote resources and statistics using hashtags like and , which highlights how common domestic violence is.
3. Donate or volunteer: Contribute to or volunteer at local domestic violence shelters and organizations that provide critical services to survivors and their families.
4.Host a drive: Collect and donate needed items, such as clothing, household goods, and hygiene products, for local shelters.
5.Educate yourself and others: Learn to recognize the signs of abuse, which can start subtly and escalate over time. Abusive behavior includes isolation, verbal abuse, unexplained injuries, and financial control.
6.For help and resources
