A few snapshots from the past few weeks! Our DSC team provides medical students with opportunities to make personal connections with the heart of Detroit- its residents. And a humbling reminder that medicine transcends just beyond a clinic and encompasses immersive care within our community

Last month the was kind enough to provide us with another donation of their coats. In addition to providing warmth, these coats also function as a storage bag and a sleeping bag. We could not be more grateful every time we are able to hand one out. Please check our their page to learn more about this incredible organization!

Outreach street runs are officially back!

Attention MSUCOM Class of 2025: Please wait until Fall semester to sign up for street runs. You will be able to sign up for membership, pay dues, etc at that time. All volunteers must go through a training session before going on runs. One will be held in October for the Class of 2025. Keep an eye out for emails and social media and announcements in the student newsletter.

Feeling very thankful this Thanksgiving! This past month we have received over 100 Empowerment Coats from Empowerment Plan. Through a generous donation from Blake Farms AND in collaboration with our partners at Wolverine Street Medicine. The Empowerment Coats are incredibly versatile and are effective up to temperatures well below 0 degrees! They function as a large parka and sleeping bag all in one! These coats have been distributed to many of our friends on the streets in an effort to keep them warm through the winter.

Empowerment Plan is a Detroit based organization that embodies sustainability in the community. Aside from producing these parkas, Empowerment Plan hires straight out of the local homeless shelters, serves their employees 2-3 meals per day, AND provides their employees with a GED education program. DSC is so lucky to be able to work with this amazing company.

An enormous shoutout to Henry Ford Hospital!!! Henry Ford put together a hospital wide sock drive and donated over 3,600 pairs of socks to DSC and Street Medicine Detroit!!!! As the weather changes so do the needs of our friends on the streets. These socks are a first step in equipping people to prepare for the coming winter months. These socks have already been distributed to some of our partners at Covenant Community Care, Inc. and Cass Community Social Services. With their help we feel confident that we will be able to reach MANY and ensure that no foot goes cold this winter!

Thanks again to Henry Ford!!!!

Last weekend members from DSC and Spartan Street Medicine
(SSM) presented at the International Street Medicine Symposium. The presentation was centered around Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in the streets. We have found so much success treating our patients with OMM. OMM has become such an important tool in providing for those on the streets.

HUGE s/o to SSM! All of us at DSC are inspired by your work and are honored to work along side you!

Special s/o to Mackenzie Fountain, Codi Sharp, Jaclyn Israel, Richard Bryce, DO, Scott Taylor DO, and Ellie Small for putting this seminar together!!

UPDATE: The last couple weeks have been busy for DSC and our partners at Street Medicine Detroit. To protect those facing homelessness we have set up EIGHT hand-washing stations in various locations around Detroit. A huge thank you to all of those who donated soap and other cleaning supplies!! We couldn't have made all of this happen without all of the added support.

Picture 1 and 2: Members maintaining hand washing stations. Just like a sink in the household, these need to be maintained every couple days! We have teams that sanitize, refill, and restock with soap. These stations were created with some incredible innovation from students and have served their purpose well!

Picture 3: One of our sink stations from Love Beyond Walls. These sinks are very easy to maintain and use. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with this organization to get these set up.

LASTLY, a HUGE shoutout to our partners at Street Medicine Detroit! It has been an absolute pleasure working with you all and we are so excited to collaborate further!

UPDATE: The past couple weeks have been incredibly busy for DSC and our partners. We have been working tirelessly to equip street teams with the necessary items to support those facing homelessness in Detroit. As social distancing laws have loosened, our need for supplies has shifted! If you would like to help us our please follow the link below to our Amazon wishlist!

Pictured you will see a generous donation of hand sanitizer. Street teams have been distributing a bottle to each person in order to protect themselves and others.

Check it out! In March, Ellie Small (DSC President 2019-2020) had the privilege to give a TED talk at TEDxMSU with regard to street medicine. Ellie shares the root and heart of DSC and street teams across the country. We urge you to watch this short video to see how street medicine can change the lives of those suffering homeless. Her words embody our mission and we hope they connect with you too!

We still get goosebumps every time we hear this talk! As always, please reach out with any questions!

Yesterday members of DSC and Street Medicine Detroit attended the White Coats for Black Lives protest at the Detroit Medical Center. We, along with many other healthcare workers, took a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in honor of George Floyd and other members of the black community who have been victims of police brutality. DSC stands with the black community and we are going to do everything we can to promote change! All lives can't matter until black lives matter.

DSC and our allies are continuting to protect and serve our friends on the streets during the COVID19 crisis. We are truly grateful to all of those that have continued to donate to our cause.
Picture 1-The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and Project 706 donated an abundance of sleeping bags and bed sheets for shelters in Detroit.
Picture 2- Soap donations for hand washing stations that DSC has helped erect across the city of Detroit
Picture 3- Hand sanitizer from Detroit Bus for our patients and street care teams.
Donations of all kinds are still welcome and much appreciated. Specifically, DSC and the team are in need of face masks of ANY kind.
As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out!
