Lifestyle Medicine Basics
It's time to take control of your health

An introduction into the root cause of health and what you can do to control your own health.

My name is Jonathan Nzoma and I am an orthopedic sports medicine specialist. I have been eating healthy, exercising, and even meditating for years. But, I still had high blood pressure and I had been taking a blood pressure pill since 2009. I was missing the information on the root cause of high blood pressure and how to reverse it. My doctor had even suggested that if my numbers did not improve, I may need to have a second medication to take for high blood pressure every day.

Quite by chance, I learned about Lifestyle Medicine and took a couple training courses. I became certified to teach Lifestyle Medicine in 2022. I put what I learned to work and made the recommended changes to my lifestyle. Today, I no longer have high blood pressure and I am off of prescription medication.

Blood pressure medication costs about $5,000 per year. One way of looking at it is, that I could have saved $65,000 and whatever other damage I caused my body over the past 13 years with Lifestyle Medicine.

Maybe you are not ready to change today. Just remember that you are responsible for your health. You can use the 6 Lifestyle Medicine core concepts to improve your health. If you or a loved one gets a diagnosis of cancer or a chronic disease like high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes, you know where to find the information you need. Thank you for your time and attention.

Change
Should change be in moderation, or all at once, cold turkey? The answer is it depends on the situation. If the situation is dire, the more rapid approach should be favored. The important part is being able to maintain the change long term. These are the core questions I’m encouraging the people that I talk to about lifestyle medicine to consider.

Trust. It’s a big deal. Lack of trust has led people to not get basic preventive lifesaving care. An estimated 20% of black men die from preventable cardiovascular disease. That means men missing from graduations and weddings that would otherwise be there. What can we do to rebuild trust?

Generations of Americans have struggled against segregation. Most of us believe in the ideal of a colorblind society. But what happens when that ideal come up against research that finds colorblindness sometimes leads to worse outcomes?

Introducing The Wellness Project

When you loose a family member to a preventable reversible medical condition, it hurts. You wish you spoke up more and discussed the topics related to nutrition and physical activity that you are familiar with and passionate about.

This project is for people interested in better health. TWP brings awareness of important health concepts, challenges assumptions, and connects personal choice with health outcomes. We will examine the impact of marketing, social pressure, and convenience on behavior. We will cover how to measure health and what you can do improve your health.

My name is Jonathan Nzoma, a doctor from Detroit Michigan, and I will be sharing all the things that I want my family to know. I hope you enjoy the information if it is for you.

To have better health a person needs proper health information, professional support, group support, and access to services. Even with all of these components the reality is that it is not easy. In the posts that follow, I will discuss one such program that has over 30 years of research reversing disease regardless of age.
