Each September 30th we recognize Orange Shirt Day.
Orange Shirt Day was started by Natives in Canada and has been embraced by Natives in the U.S., too, because it is a movement related to the impact of the forced residential school systems of both Canada and the United States. More specifically, this movement is the result of the experience of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation (Canoe Creek Indian Band). For more info about her experience, see the link at the end of this post.
In Canada it is also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and in the U.S. it is also known as National Day of Remembrance. September 30, we are remembering the Native children and youth who attended the mandated Residential School Systems. We are remembering countless families torn apart, and communities ravaged by government-sanctioned practices – we must also acknowledge the generational trauma that exists and continues to impact Native people and communities. Over the decades, hundreds of burial sites and unmarked graves have been uncovered at U.S. and Canadian school locations.
To those who never came home, you are not forgotten, but live on in our hearts.

Holiday Closure
We will be closed Friday, September 26, for Michigan Indian Day. We will resume regular business hours Monday, September 29. Please plan accordingly.
Michigan Indian Day, held on the fourth Friday of September, was established by Michigan legislation in 1974 to honor the significant cultural and historical contributions of Native Americans to the state. Signed into law by Governor Milliken, the act recognizes Michigan's Native peoples and tribes, but is not a legal holiday. The day provides a focus on the presence and importance of the state's Indigenous populations, particularly the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi tribes that form the Anishinaabe alliance

First off, happy first day of fall! As gardening season winds down, we want to thank community member, Robin Latta and AIHFS Assistant Director of Operations, John Peterson, for their contributions of planning and tending our courtyard garden throughout the growing season. Also assisting with major weeding of the melons area was our CEO, Chasity Dial. This year in our courtyard gardens they grew tomatoes, green peppers, chili peppers, jalapeno peppers, eggplant and melons.
Secondly, we want to share that we will be closed this Friday in recognition of Michigan Indian Day. Please plan accordingly.

Please note, this week Farm Stand will not be available here at AIHFS. Check out our latest fliers!
