This week, we are proud to feature Romina Profeta, a 2001 graduate of our Physical Therapy program, as part of our Friday Faces of Applebaum series.

Romina discovered her passion for physical therapy while volunteering at an outpatient clinic. During her time at Wayne State, the rigorous coursework, supportive faculty, and small class environment helped shape the skilled clinician she is today.

Combining her expertise in physical therapy with a passion for Pilates, Romina became STOTT Pilates certified and, in 2024, co-founded Tower Therapeutic Fitness and Wellness Pilates Studio, bringing innovative rehab and wellness solutions to her clients.

Romina continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of her patients and clients, embodying the values of leadership, dedication, and lifelong learning.

💚💛 Wayne State Physical Therapy – shaping leaders in healthcare.

For Wayne State University occupational therapy student Ifiyenia Zisopoulos, a fieldwork placement at Therapeutic Rehab was more than a typical clinical learning experience.

During her time there, Ifiyenia saw how the facility’s woodshop supported clients in achieving their daily routines and personal goals. The experience also brought back memories of her father’s woodshop, where she spent years watching him practice his craft as a professional woodworker.

Inspired by these connections, her fieldwork evolved into a broader collaboration, demonstrating the power of innovation and hands-on learning in occupational therapy.

This week, we’re excited to introduce Ed Szandzik, a 1980 graduate of our pharmacy program, as part of our Friday Faces of Applebaum series.

Ed knew his career path early, by 8th grade he had already decided he wanted to become a pharmacist. By 15, he was working in a local pharmacy, inspired by his love of math and science and an uncle who was also a Wayne State pharmacy graduate.

When Ed graduated in 1980, clinical pharmacy was just beginning. Pharmacists were only starting to join physicians on patient rounds and had to prove the value they could bring to patient care. Today, pharmacists are recognized as essential members of the healthcare team, a transformation Ed witnessed firsthand.

After an incredible 42-year career at Henry Ford Health, Ed retired as System Vice President of Pharmacy. Today, he continues to give back to the profession through consulting, advisory board service, and mentoring the next generation of pharmacists.

We are proud to recognize Ed as this week’s Applebaum Warrior. 💚💛

What happens when clinical education extends beyond the classroom?

In the latest episode of Where Health Happens, Mike Morland sits down with Colin Colter, assistant clinical professor in Wayne State University’s Physician Assistant Studies program, to discuss how service-based learning is shaping the next generation of health care professionals.

From community health efforts in Detroit to global outreach through Exxat Cares, Colter’s work highlights a powerful truth: the challenges seen abroad often reflect those in our own communities. These experiences help students better understand barriers to care and prepare them to deliver more thoughtful, equitable health care. go.wayne.edu/whh-ep-03
