Introducing an updated type of technology can take massive coordination. This was certainly the case when teams from the OR, Anesthesia, Radiology, and Neurosurgery worked together, along with our facilities and logistics teams, to bring the renovated iMRI to Henry Ford Hospital. Dr Ian Lee performed the very first case in the newly upgraded suite — a complex multifiber laser ablation and craniotomy on a young woman with a low-grade glioma. Lisa Scarpace, project manager for the Neurosurgery team, was part of the original planning team in 2009 when this vision to introduce updated technology began, and was an integral leader in this iteration.

Exciting news from Henry Ford Health!

As we prepare for the opening of our Henry Ford + MSU Research Center in mid-2027, faculty recruitment is in full swing. Our current campaign is looking to bring 10 new cancer researchers on board, with even more specialties planned for 2026. Once open, the center will host approximately 40 Henry Ford P*s, plus an additional 40 researchers recruited through the Henry Ford + MSU partnership over the next five years.

Several Henry Ford research programs will be relocating to this state-of-the-art facility, including:
• CIGMA Laboratory
• Dermatology
• Hematology/Oncology
• Hypertension
• Neuroscience
• Radiation Oncology
• Urology
• Women’s Health

This center will be the first space brought to life as part of our Future of Health, and we couldn’t be more proud. A huge thank you to everyone involved in planning and constructing this incredible facility — it’s thrilling to imagine the breakthroughs, collaborations, and discoveries that will come from this accessible, innovative space.

The future of research is almost here, and it’s bright!

For more than 30 years, Jack Rock, MD has exemplified what it means to serve — caring for patients, training the next generation of neurosurgeons, and representing Henry Ford Health on a global stage.

At the Henry Ford Hermelin Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Rock’s dedication extends far beyond the operating room. As a leader in neurosurgical education, he recently served as an instructor for international neurosurgery resident “boot camps,” helping train junior residents through intensive, hands-on learning experiences. These programs, originally developed in North America, now support neurosurgical education across Southeast Asia — including recent courses in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Manila, Philippines.

Through this work, Dr. Rock continues to invest in resident training, elevate global neurosurgical care, and uphold Henry Ford’s longstanding commitment to excellence in education and patient-centered care.

Thank you, Dr. Rock, for more than three decades of service, mentorship, and leadership — and for the lasting impact you make on patients and physicians around the world.

As we welcome 2026, we honor every patient, every caregiver, and every loved one walking the brain tumor journey with courage and grace.

This past year may have brought uncertainty, exhaustion, and moments that felt impossibly heavy — but it also revealed strength, resilience, and love in their truest forms. Every appointment attended, every question asked, every night spent worrying, every act of compassion… they all speak to a depth of bravery that deserves to be recognized.

And finally, as we anticipate a new year that will certainly bring more milestones and innovations, we recognize and appreciate how far we've come. In 2025 we reached a remarkable achievement: the collection of the 6,000th tumor sample in the Henry Ford Hermelin Brain Tumor Center’s Brain Tumor Bank. This effort began with the vision and leadership of neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Rosenblum, who is Chair Emeritus of Neurosurgery. The bank has grown into one of the largest and most respected tumor banks in the world – a resource that continues to power discoveries and transform how we understand, diagnose, and treat brain tumors.

It is because of David Hermelin’s generosity that this Center is possible, along with the many other philanthropists who continue to support this mission. Bravo to the entire team for building on this powerful differentiator for our patients and for all of Henry Ford Health.

Today belongs to Dr. Jack Rock who received the Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award at the Henry Ford Health Jubilee Gala held on October 18, 2025, honoring those who have made an extraordinary impact through their work for the advancement of the Henry Ford Medical Group, and to the direct benefit of our patients.

Today, we highlight Drs. Walbert and Rogers and their roles at the 2025 Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO) Annual Meeting

Dr. Walbert co-chaired the Survivorship Subject Matter Track, receiving this invitation due to his long-standing commitment to survivorship, palliative, and hospice care for patients with brain tumors – all areas of care that are often underrepresented but critically important. Our Hermelin Brain Tumor Center has received national prominence, in part, due to Dr. Walbert’s advocacy and expertise. His work certainly elevates Henry Ford Health as a center of innovation in neuro-oncology. It ensures that cutting-edge clinical trials continue to reach the patients who need them most.

Dr. Rogers co-chaired the Central Nervous System (CNS) Metastases Subject Matter Track, allowing her to share the wisdom she has gained over the years to guide sessions, select scientific awards, and share expertise that advances the field of CNS metastases. This appointment recognized and honored Dr. Rogers’ dedication to research, patient and resident education, and treatment, always with a focus on bringing the very best innovations back to our patients.
