April is National Minority Health Month — a time to recognize that gaps in health care still impact communities across our country, including right here in Michigan.

To kick off the month, Meridian's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alvin Haynes joined Dr. Cleamon Moorer on The Home Health Care Today Show to discuss health equity, why gaps in care still exist, and how people can advocate for their own health.

Parents and caregivers: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is recommending an accelerated MMR vaccine dose for infants ages 6–11 months who live in or have traveled to Washtenaw, Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, Jackson, Livingston or Lenawee counties due to a rise in measles cases that is spreading through these communities. Families in affected counties or those traveling to these areas should review the updated guidance.

The MMR vaccine is routinely recommended at 12 to 15 months of age with a second dose given a minimum of 28 days after the first dose. Given the possibility of ongoing community transmission, MDHHS is also recommending that infants ages 6 to 11 months receive an accelerated first dose of measles vaccine if they are in the following groups:

- Residents of Washtenaw, Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, Jackson, Livingston or Lenawee counties.
- Individuals who travel to Washtenaw and Monroe counties.

This recommendation is in effect until Saturday, May 16, which is two incubation periods after the infectious period of the last identified measles case. Any updates to this recommendation will be posted on the MDHHS measles webpage. Infants ages 6 to 11 months of age who receive an accelerated first dose will require two additional doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age to complete the series.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a common part of everyday life — including healthcare. Some members may use tools like ChatGPT to get quick answers or guidance about their health. While this can be helpful, it can also raise questions or concerns for providers.

AI will continue to shape healthcare, and providers play an important role in helping members use it wisely. That means:

• Listening when members mention AI‑generated advice
• Helping determine what next steps make sense
• Guiding members to trusted resources and appropriate care

AI isn’t perfect. Information can be outdated, and symptoms can change. That’s where your clinical expertise matters most — helping explain the “why” and providing the human insight AI can’t replace.
