Meet Ray, our “Patient of the Month.” While vacationing in Aruba in March 2024, Ray collided with another rider on an electric scooter and was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital, where Kathleen was told he had a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. Because travel to Michigan was too far, he was transferred to a hospital in Miami for further care. After five weeks, Ray was stable enough to return home and began inpatient rehabilitation at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). He participated in daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and his therapists challenged him while supporting his determination. “They treated him like a friend or family member,” Kathleen says.Within a week, Ray was discharged to outpatient therapy at RIM’s Novi Center, where he continued making strong progress. Less than six months after his accident, he returned to driving and to his work as a Director of Strategic Planning. “RIM supported the healing process and helped elevate my mind and brain almost back to where it was,” Ray says.

Is there a “right” age for knee replacement? DMC orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bryan Little, discusses why age alone may not be the only consideration when evaluating knee pain and treatment options. He explains how factors like overall health, activity level, and how pain affects daily life can help guide conversations with a physician.

Meet Latinya, our “Patient of the Month.” After contracting COVID, she spent 20 days in a coma and had both legs amputated below the knee. She spent 108 days at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital before transferring to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) for inpatient rehab. At RIM, she worked on her strength and stamina, and by the time her prosthetic limbs arrived, she was strong enough to walk in them. Later that year, she had a stroke that left her left side paralyzed. She knew there was only one place to go...back to RIM.

Today, Latinya continues outpatient rehab three times a week and can now take a few steps, cook, drive, and care for herself. She says RIM’s therapies, equipment, and compassion have supported her throughout her journey.
