Meet Raymond, our “Patient of the Month.” In June 2022, what began as a normal day quickly turned serious after he developed severe pain and began acting unusually. He was taken to DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, where he learned he had a rapidly spreading infection. To stop it, doctors amputated both of his legs below the knee, his right arm, and several fingers on his left hand.

A few weeks later, he transitioned to outpatient therapy at RIM’s Northwest Center. With physical, occupational, and speech therapy, he grew stronger and prepared for prosthetic limbs. “My medical team was so supportive,” he says. Today, Raymond uses his prosthetic legs and arm with confidence. “I’m a mechanic, I can still do everything I used to, just a little differently,” he shares. “RIM really gave me so much confidence to move forward.”

Meet Ray, our “Patient of the Month.” While vacationing in Aruba in March 2024, Ray collided with another rider on an electric scooter and was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital, where Kathleen was told he had a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. Because travel to Michigan was too far, he was transferred to a hospital in Miami for further care. After five weeks, Ray was stable enough to return home and began inpatient rehabilitation at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). He participated in daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and his therapists challenged him while supporting his determination. “They treated him like a friend or family member,” Kathleen says.Within a week, Ray was discharged to outpatient therapy at RIM’s Novi Center, where he continued making strong progress. Less than six months after his accident, he returned to driving and to his work as a Director of Strategic Planning. “RIM supported the healing process and helped elevate my mind and brain almost back to where it was,” Ray says.
