Sabemos que finalmente fue aprobada la primera vacuna contra COVID-19 (Pfizer) y que durante esta semana se comenzará la vacunación en PR. A pesar de que la vacuna no ha sido estudiada en embarazadas ni personas lactantes, diferentes organizaciones han publicado sus recomendaciones en cuanto a esta población.

Hoy 14 de diciembre de 2020, la Academia de Medicina de Lactancia (ABM) publicó un statement titulado “Consideraciones para la vacunación de COVID-19 durante la lactancia”. Les dejo un resumen de la publicación en la forma de preguntas y respuestas.

¿Quién debe recibir la vacuna en estos momentos?

🤱🏽 La primera fase de vacunación incluye a los proveedores de salud. Aquellas personas que sean proveedores de salud y se encuentren lactando deben tomar decisiones en conjunto con su médico. Esta discusión debe incluir los beneficios/riesgos de recibir la vacuna, los riesgos de detener la lactancia y los beneficios de protección al infante lactado.

¿Se puede pasar la vacuna al bebé en la leche?

🤱🏿La vacuna está hecha de mRNA cubierta de nanopartículas de lípidos (grasas). La vacuna es administrada en el músculo y no llega a la sangre. Por esta razón, es muy poco probable que la vacuna como tal llegue al seno y que sea transferida en la leche al bebé.

¿Si la vacuna se le pasara al bebé, le puede hacer daño?

🤱🏻En el caso de que las partículas de la vacuna fueran transferidas a través de la leche al bebé, la vacuna sería digerida y destruida por el sistema digestivo y no tendría mayores efectos.

¿Los anticuerpos (defensas) creados luego de la vacuna, se le pasan al bebé?

🤱🏾Los anticuerpos IgG, IgA, IgM se han encontrado en la leche luego de infección. De la misma forma, luego de la vacunación de la madre entendemos que los anticuerpos producidos se pasarían en la leche y por lo tanto lo protegerían al bebé de infección por COVID.

¿Si me pongo la vacuna, tengo que dejar de lactar?

🤱Aquellas madres que decidan recibir la vacuna NO tienen que detener la lactancia, según las recomendaciones del ABM. Al igual que muchas otras vacunas, se espera que por la manera en que funciona esta vacuna también sea segura durante la lactancia.

Espero que esta información ayude a aclarar sus dudas y a tomar la mejor decisión para cada caso individualmente.

Rock Star! Way to go to our NAPPLSC member and volunteer Esperanza Dodge!

Today, we are shouting out Esperanza Dodge of Bold Futures! Esperanza is one of the founders of the New Mexico Doula Association. She serves as the Operations Director at Bold Futures (formerly Young Women United). Esperanza believes birth and parenting justice should include those most impacted, including women, people and families living through addiction, young parents, and families of color. As an advisor to the NMDA, she enjoys bringing a reproductive justice lens to doula advocacy and working to make doula work more sustainable and doula care more accessible to New Mexico families.

Thank you for your continued work on behalf of doulas and families, Esperanza. Your guidance and perspective has been vital for the NMDA.
