Detroit MOTTEP Foundation

Detroit MOTTEP Foundation MOTTEP serves the African American, American Indian, Hispanic/Latino and Asian/Pacific Islander populations statewide.

The Detroit MOTTEP Foundation saves lives in ethnic minority communities by dispelling common myths about organ/tissue/eye donation and transplant and encouraging healthier living. We use a community-based approach to increase the number of minority organ and tissue donors, and to encourage healthy living to lessen the need for transplants within minority communities. Organ donation is critical to

the minority community because minorities in general (and African Americans in particular) are disproportionately affected by diseases that often lead to organ failure including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Key facts about minorities and donation and transplantation:

• 50% of all patients waiting for transplants are of an ethnic minority.
• Nearly 50% of those needing kidney transplants in Michigan are African American.
• 25 % of the available donors are minorities. Minorities do donate organs and tissues, but not enough to meet the urgent need. Some may be reluctant to sign the Michigan Organ Donor Registry because of:

• Religious beliefs and superstitions
• Mistrust of the medical community
• Lack of awareness
• Racism
• Fear of premature death

Kidney disease disproportionately impacts multicultural communities, making awareness, prevention, and access to transplant even more critical.

At the Detroit MOTTEP Foundation, we are committed to educating communities about kidney health, organ donation, and life-saving transplantation.

One donor can save up to 8 lives.

✨Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month

For a century, Black History Month has honored the 400-year legacy of brilliance, resilience, and contributions of African Americans who have shaped our nation and strengthened our communities. From pioneers in medicine and science to leaders in faith, justice, and service, our history is powerful, and our legacy continues.

At Detroit MOTTEP Foundation, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us as we work to save lives, educate communities, and build trust through organ and tissue donation awareness.

This month, we celebrate our past, honor our present, and commit to creating a healthier future for generations to come. 🖤✊🏾
