Detroit MOTTEP Foundation

Detroit MOTTEP Foundation MOTTEP serves the African American, American Indian, Hispanic/Latino and Asian/Pacific Islander populations statewide.

The Detroit MOTTEP Foundation saves lives in ethnic minority communities by dispelling common myths about organ/tissue/eye donation and transplant and encouraging healthier living. We use a community-based approach to increase the number of minority organ and tissue donors, and to encourage healthy living to lessen the need for transplants within minority communities. Organ donation is critical to

the minority community because minorities in general (and African Americans in particular) are disproportionately affected by diseases that often lead to organ failure including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Key facts about minorities and donation and transplantation:

• 50% of all patients waiting for transplants are of an ethnic minority.
• Nearly 50% of those needing kidney transplants in Michigan are African American.
• 25 % of the available donors are minorities. Minorities do donate organs and tissues, but not enough to meet the urgent need. Some may be reluctant to sign the Michigan Organ Donor Registry because of:

• Religious beliefs and superstitions
• Mistrust of the medical community
• Lack of awareness
• Racism
• Fear of premature death

To every walker, runner, volunteer, sponsor, vendor, and supporter, YOU made the 28th Annual LIFE Walk & Run unforgettable!

Because of you, Belle Isle was filled with purpose, joy, and unity as we walked and ran to celebrate life and raise awareness for organ and tissue donation.

To our generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, amazing vendors, and incredible health fair partners, we couldn't have done it without you.

And to our first-time attendees, welcome to the LIFE Walk family. We can’t wait to see you again!

Together, we are saving lives with every step.

Today, we honor Henrietta Lacks on what would’ve been her 105th birthday. This Black woman’s cells changed the world — yet they were taken without her consent. Her legacy lives on in every medical breakthrough. We stand with her family as they fight to define it. Rest in Power.

💪🏾April is National Minority Health Month!💪🏾

At Detroit MOTTEP Foundation, we’re committed to eliminating health disparities and empowering communities of color to live longer, healthier lives.

This month, we shine a spotlight on the importance of equity in healthcare, especially in areas like organ and tissue donation, chronic disease prevention, and access to life-saving resources.

Health is a right, not a privilege. Let’s keep pushing for awareness, education, and action to Meet The Moment and build healthier futures for our communities.

🩺 Stay informed.
🍎 Make healthy choices.
🫀 Talk about organ donation.
🤝🏾Advocate for equity.
