Meet Mohammad Muntakim, M.B.A., a first-year medical student at the Wayne State University School of Medicine serving on Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield’s Health, Human Services, Homelessness and Poverty Solutions Committee.

“Growing up in Detroit, I have seen the variety of needs of our community, especially the needs of the most vulnerable—my goal is to uplift that,” said Muntakim, who received his master’s of business administration degree from the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business. “This committee is focused on addressing health care, homelessness and poverty—all of which are in intersection to providing a better quality of life for Detroiters.”

Last month, second-year graduate student Ece Erder and fourth-year medical student Ethan Firestone, pictured with postdoctoral fellow Naoto Kuroda, Ph.D., attended the American Epilepsy Society Annual Meeting in Atlanta to present their research!

Ece shared her work “Sensitization of cortico-cortical evoked potential is a common feature of epileptic networks across different etiologies,” and Ethan presented his on “Normative Distribution and Epileptogenic Characterization of High-Frequency Oscillation Phase-Amplitude Coupling and Effective Connectivity Under Sevoflurane.”

They also co-authored another poster, “Intraoperative high-frequency oscillations as a biomarker in MRI-negative epilepsy surgery.” Both Ece and Ethan are mentored by Dr. Eishi Asano in the Department of neurology.

⭐ 1️⃣ 🏅 And here it is… our No. 1 most popular post of 2025, measured by engagement from our followers, is our showcase of medical students who gathered to hand paint baby onesies for “our little fighters” at the Children's Hospital of Michigan's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, each adding a playful design or an encouraging message. The 48 onesies were then hung in the art gallery space in the Mazurek Medical Education Commons before being given to babies and their families with a note of encouragement.

At No. 4 in our countdown to our most popular Facebook posts of the year measured by engagement, this photo is from when our Warrior M.D. M2 students packed this Scott Hall auditorium in November to launch their U.S. Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 journey with a student-initiated and student-led study plan workshop, part of our Step Prep Workshop and Webinar Series.

The session concluded with a panel of M3 and M4 mentors, who shared experiences, answered questions and provided individualized advice, helping peers approach the USMLE Step 1 exam with confidence and purpose.
