In Michigan, 13.6% of adults smoke ci******es and about 8.4% currently use e-ci******es or va**ng products. Among high school students, 16.5% report using to***co products, and over half of youth who v**e say they first tried it by age 13.

As part of Black History Month, Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network is proud to recognize Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark as one of our Black Mental Health Pioneers.

Hear from Chamika Phillips, DWIHN's Sr. Director of Organizational Culture and Climate, about this trailblazing psychologist whose research on children’s self-perception, known as the “doll test,” revealed the psychological impact of segregation and racism. Her work became a critical part of the evidence used in the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, helping reshape the future of education and mental health awareness in the United States.

Her legacy reminds us that mental health equity is essential to community well-being, and that representation and culturally responsive care matter.

Social justice and mental health are closely connected. Things like discrimination, limited access to care, and unfair systems can deeply affect a person’s well-being.

On World Day of Social Justice, we’re reminded that real mental wellness is possible only when everyone can get the help and resources they need. When mental health care is fair and accessible, whole communities are stronger.
