As many of you are acutely aware, the Department of Education is considering whether to continue the long-standing health professions exemption for Unsubsidized Direct Loans. As the DOE considers how to implement the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the administration is soliciting public comments about critical student loan issues, including the health professions exemption.

We know that many of you not only have strong feelings about the threats to Unsubsidized Direct Loans, but rely on them to be able to attend WSUSOM.

If you would like to submit a public or anonymous comment to the Department of Education, be sure to submit it by August 28th at 11:59 PM ET. You can find more information about the situation, tips for your comment, and a link to the submission portal on this page by the AAMC: https://aamcaction.org/protect-access-to-federal-student-loans/?emci=d747297b-f67d-f011-b481-6045bda9d23e&emdi=d418ebd8-bc7e-f011-b484-6045bdeb7413&ceid=30109637

WSUSOM AMA is honored to welcome the newly sworn-in President of the American Medical Association, Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, for an exclusive virtual presentation for WSUSOM! Dr. Mukkamala is a private practice otolaryngologist based in Flint, MI who has a long history of service and leadership with the American Medical Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the Genesee County Medical Society. He is especially passionate about addressing Flint's drinking water crisis and revitalizing his hometown.

Join us on Zoom on August 6, 2025, from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM to hear Dr. Mukkamala discuss his personal journey within the AMA, the AMA's structure and role in advocating for a better healthcare system, and leadership in organized medicine. This is an excellent opportunity to not only hear from one of the most high-profile advocates in our profession, but also to become familiar with the AMA itself. We especially encourage those who want to be active with the AMA to attend this event as this will serve as our primary introductory meeting before we host more specific events on topics like resolution writing.

Please check your student email for the Zoom link.
