Hear directly from our staff with Liberty POST Provider Corner! This week we have a cool conversation game that can be played anywhere from Lisa Christensen, a Speech-Language Pathologist in our Rochester region.

Lisa says: "Play 'Conversation Ping-Pong!' When a child 'serves' the ball (conversation) to you by gesturing (e.g., pointing, waving), vocalizing, or talking, you then 'return' the ball by giving a response that is similar in type/complexity. For example, if they point at something, you point back and use one word; if they use one word, you respond back with 1-3 words. After your 'turn,' look at them like you're really excited for their response and wait like that for at least 10 seconds. Every time they 'return' the conversation, 'return' it right back! See how long you can keep this game of conversational ping pong going and try not to be the one to end it!

I play a version of this 'game' with my 2-year-old clients, my teenage daughters, and even my colleagues! It increases engagement and communication and it helps me from getting distracted and ending the interaction too early."

Thanks, Lisa!

Hear directly from our staff with Liberty POST Provider Corner! This week we have instructions for playing a versatile game called Row Your Boat from Lori Ciesielski, a Related Services Supervisor in our Buffalo region.

Lori says: "Row your boat is one of my favorite games to play because you can do it with babies all the way up to preschoolers, there are so many ways to change it up, and you don't need any supplies for it.

If you're doing this game with a baby, they should have some trunk control, but they don't necessarily need to be able to sit independently. The parent (or caregiver, sibling, etc) is typically facing the child and can offer physical support as needed to the baby to help them to move without falling over. If the baby is working toward improved sitting balance, I may suggest the parent place the baby on their lap (or for a bigger challenge, on the parent's bent knees).

I typically start with 'row your boat' with a back-and-forth sway. Then follow it with 'rock your boat' with a side-to-side sway. Then 'tip your boat' with bigger side-to-side movements that offset their balance playfully. Then, for the big finish, go back to rowing the boat and end by saying, 'If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream: ahhh!'

Some of the benefits of this game:
-static and dynamic sitting balance
-protective reactions
-co-regulation
-building attachment and engagement
-increasing shared attention
-and having fun together!"

Thanks, Lori!

Hear directly from our staff with Liberty POST Provider Corner! This week we have a great idea for working on typing or handwriting at home from Jenny Somekh, an Occupational Therapist in our Long Island region.

Jenny says: "A lot of my students are working on typing and handwriting so for either one I have them plan a meal with their parents and type up or handwrite a shopping list based on the recipe. This requires them to highlight important information in a recipe and write down the necessary ingredients."

Thanks, Jenny!

Hear directly from our staff with Liberty POST Provider Corner! This week we have some ideas for at-home fun centered around laundry baskets from Jill Gillette, a Physical Therapy Team Supervisor in our Syracuse region.

Jill says: "Parents can use a simple laundry basket for LOTS of different fun. The child can climb in and out of the laundry basket (great for motor planning, coordination, strengthening). While the child sits in it, the parent can move the laundry basket back and forth and sing 'Row Your Boat' or another song. The parent can help the child pretend they are going on a car, train, or boat ride (pretend play). The movement can work on the sensory system. You can playfully 'dump' the child out of the laundry basket at the end of the song, so they have to climb back in.

You can use the laundry basket for dump and fill' games which are great for toddlers. This is a great activity for strengthening, balance, and cause and effect. A child can place stuffed animals in the laundry basket for pretend play, or place them under the laundry basket to pretend they are in a cage like at the zoo. You can also use the laundry basket as a 'target' to throw things such as balls into.

There are many, many ideas to use a laundry basket for with simple things you already have around the house!"

Thanks, Jill!

Hear directly from our staff with Liberty POST Provider Corner! This week we have a fun activity idea from Megan Dalton, a Special Education Teacher in our Rochester region.

Sea Animal Sensory Bin:
1. Fill ice cube trays with baking soda and water.
2. Put sea animal figurines in the ice cube trays (the animals do not need to fit perfectly - sticking a fin or a tail into the ice cube tray works fine).
3. Put in freezer and let freeze overnight.
4. Fill a bin with water and vinegar (blue food coloring optional).
5. When ready for use, take the baking soda/sea animal ice cubes out of the freezer and let the children drop them into the water/vinegar mixture! Let them play with the animals and observe the fizzing reaction between the baking soda ice cubes and the vinegar mixture.

Megan says: "A sensory bin activity like this is beneficial because it engages multiple senses, which can help with sensory processing skills. The tactile experience of touching the cold ice and feeling it melt, combined with the visual and auditory effects of the fizzing reaction between baking soda and vinegar, can be very stimulating and enjoyable. This activity also encourages fine motor skills as children manipulate the ice cubes and sea animals, and it can promote scientific curiosity and understanding of cause and effect."

Thanks, Megan!
