There are over 80,000 people on the national kidney transplant waiting list – and many people wait more than 5 years for a kidney from a deceased donor. The waiting list has doubled in size over the past 10 years - and it continues to grow. Millions of dollars are spent to encourage people to register to be an organ donor in the event of their untimely death. However, only 1% of the deaths result in organs that could be used. Even if all of these organs were able to be recovered, it would not alleviate the shortage. A staggering 4,500 people die every year waiting for a kidney transplant. Many of these individuals were good candidates for a transplant when they were first put on the waiting list. Nationally, the number of living kidney transplants has decreased in each of the past 4 years. The programs currently in place have not been effective at increasing the number of living kidney donations. Information about living kidney donation is available from many sources; transplant hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, nonprofit organizations and numerous web sites. However, this information is either not reaching the people who need it the most, or does not provide adequate help. Equally important, there isn’t a program available that helps someone communicate their need for a living kidney donation to family members and friends. Fear of speaking about their need is one of the main reasons and hurdles given for not pursuing living donation.

“In January of 2021, I donated my kidney to my younger brother, Harry. He suffered with kidney disease for over 25 years and received his first transplant in 1997 from our father. After 22 years, the first transplanted kidney began to fail, so Harry needed to return to dialysis for the past two years.

I’m a 55 year-old teacher and golf coach. I wanted to make this ultimate sacrifice to give Harry his kidney and another chance of life without all-consuming dialysis. Dialysis takes 5-6 hours three days a week. Harry was always exhausted after dialysis. It had been very difficult to lead a normal life.

After consulting with my wife and children, I decided to move forward with the donation. The Transplant Team at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was very thorough. They truly put the patient’s needs first. The team was truly professional, extremely cautious and caring which made this long process much easier.

As I start the process of healing and getting back to normal life, I urge everyone to consider donating to save a life. It transforms the life of both the donor and recipient. The Jefferson staff would constantly refer to me as a hero. I felt uneasy with the word hero until I saw my brother up walking and looking forward to a normal life. My brother has not had to endure dialysis for the first time in two years. He is a truly unique and genuine person with a free spirit and kind heart. To see Harry flourish with this new gift fills me with excitement and hope.

This process has inspired me to reflect a lot about my life and how our lives influence others. My life has been a positive one; hopefully this will inspire people to consider organ donation and maybe my golf game improves.”- Joe P., Glen Mills, PA
