Our Mission

Barrett Hospital & HealthCare provides compassionate care, healing, and health-improving service to all community members throughout life's journey. Our History

"There may be larger hospitals but there will be none better." ~Martin Barrett
In 1922, Martin Barrett built the main building of "Barrett Hospital" in Dillon for $100,000. Joseph Shineberger and Margaret Roe also contributed $50,000 to create an endowed fund. James Guild, the table linens were sewn by the Methodist Ladies Aid Society and the Methodist Sunday School furnished canned fruit, vegetables and jellies. Hospital garments were sewn by the Ladies of St. Rose and towels for the operating room were hemmed by the Presbyterian Ladies. Other community donors furnished rooms, provided specific pieces of equipment and contributed financially to the construction and furnishings. "

This is an accounting of the original Barrett Hospital grand opening in 1922, which is taken from "A History of Healthcare in Beaverhead County". This publication details the very first settlers to the county and the physicians who traveled through or set up in the Beaverhead, centennial, and Big Hole Valleys. The original Barrett Hospital served the community for 50 years, and a replacement facility was completed in 1972. It underwent several extensive renovations, additions and upgrades over the next 39 years. Today, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has a modern facility completed in 2012, with a team of Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, more than 40 nurses and more than 255 employees that provide services to more than 12,000 people in our service area.

DOT Physical Scheduling Update – Effective February 16

Our goal is to always serve our patients to the best of our ability.

Due to increasing walk-in volumes and the time requirements necessary to complete Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals thoroughly, we will be updating how these visits are scheduled.

Beginning Monday, February 16, all DOT physicals must be scheduled in advance and will no longer be accommodated as walk-in visits.

Why the change?

DOT physicals require:

Extended appointment times
A comprehensive medical assistant rooming process (vitals, vision testing, hearing testing, color testing, urine screening, ID verification)
Multiple pages of required documentation for both provider and staff
Evaluation by a DOT-certified provider
In addition, not all providers are DOT certified, and certified providers are not available in walk-in clinic every day. Scheduling ensures consistent access to the appropriate provider and reduces delays for patients with acute illnesses who rely on walk-in services.

What this means for you

✔️ Call ahead to schedule your DOT physical
✔️ Appointments will be booked with a DOT-certified provider
✔️ We encourage scheduling your next DOT at the time of your visit to avoid expiration gaps

Please remember: Drivers receive multiple notifications from the state prior to expiration. If your DOT has expired for less than one year, you may renew without penalty (though you may not be permitted to drive until renewed)

To schedule your DOT physical, please call our clinic directly at (406) 683-1188.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide timely, safe, and efficient care for all of our patients.

❤️ Cardiac Rehab Week – Staff Spotlight

Meet Tara Walker, RN – Our Cardiac Rehab Nurse

During Cardiac Rehab Week, we’re proud to highlight the incredible nurse behind our Cardiac Rehabilitation program — and the heart behind the healing.

Tara Walker, RN, serves in our Cardiopulmonary Department and is our dedicated Cardiac Rehab nurse.

When she’s off the clock, Tara loves spending time with her husband and kiddos, running, traveling, fishing, and camping. The outdoors and family time are her way of recharging.

Running, in particular, is her “therapy.” As Tara puts it, she may not be as fast as she used to be, and things may hurt a little more — but after a run, she always feels better mentally and physically.

Tara always knew she wanted to be a nurse. For her, nursing is the perfect combination of skill and compassion. Her entire nursing career has been in cardiac care, and this is her first role in Cardiac Rehab. She loves watching patients rebuild their confidence and stamina, strengthening not just their physical heart, but their emotional one as well.

Cardiac Rehab is about more than exercise. It’s about encouragement, education, accountability, and restoring confidence after a cardiac event. And Tara brings all of that — and more — to every patient she serves.

Help us celebrate Tara during Cardiac Rehab Week and thank her for the care, compassion, and heart she pours into our community every single day. ❤️

Before many diagnoses are made or treatment plans are created, there’s often a blood draw behind the scenes. During National Phlebotomist Week, we want to thank the professionals whose accuracy, focus, and care help ensure providers have the information they need to support patients. From routine lab work to time-sensitive testing, their role is essential to quality care.

We appreciate the calm presence and attention to detail our phlebotomists bring to every patient interaction.
