Family members who aren't addicted are still affected by addiction. While it is vital that the addict get immediate help, the family can also benefit from programs that are designed to help them find a new way of life. Family recovery allows for hope and healing as each member learns new tools for better living.

I always thought that gratitude was something you felt...and I suppose it is but it doesn't mean much if we don't take action on the feeling. If I say, I love you, you're going to want to see that love demonstrated and if I say I'm thankful, it means very little if what I do doesn't reflect that.

For years there was a disconnect between what I said and what I did. I thought everyone should just know that I intended to do better but it was almost impossible to make my words and my actions match when so much of my energy was hijacked by trying to manage a lifestyle that was chaotic on a good day.

In recovery, we place a high priority on making sure our words and actions align. If I say I want to be sober, I do the things sober people do. If I say I love my family, I show up and participate. If I say I'm thankful for my home or my job or my friends, I live in a way that demonstrates that so clearly, that the words are unnecessary.

Change can be uncomfortable…

That’s why we tend to think of change as bad—but is it? Is it bad to be nudged or even shoved out of our comfort zone? Is it bad to need to listen and learn? Change is where we grow. Change is when we practice faith. Change is how we see God working.
