I knew I needed to clean up my life. Years of redoing whatever it took to avoid my problems had left me exhausted with challenges that had to be faced. I was so afraid—but I was told I wouldn’t have to walk through anything alone. But how would I get clean on the inside? How would I ever get okay with the mistakes I made and the people I hurt? The twelve steps gave me a path to true freedom. It took time, courage, and persistence—but as. I grew, I found that those things that had caused me such shame were useful because they helped me connect with women who needed to get free. The more I helped others, the happier I was. In time, my past was no longer a source of shame, but a part of a story of God’s grace and the power of real recovery!

Sober is my superpower! When I am sober, I have the power to help others. I have the power to show up. I have the power to change and grow. When I am sober my life can change in ways I never expected.

I was told that instead of worrying about “getting my ducks in a row” I should focus on just one thing: my recovery. When I focus on recovery, all the other “ducks” in my life wind up exactly where they are supposed to be exactly when they are supposed to be there.

Did you realize that once you’re sober, you don’t have to “pace yourself” over a three-day weekend!

No hangovers!

You don’t have to wait until Tuesday to see the judge!

You don’t have to text three friends to figure out what happened on Saturday night!

No walk of shame!

Addiction doesn’t go away just because we refuse to call it by name.

Ignoring, pretending, and minimizing won’t change the fact that drinking and using is dangerous for those who can’t control it—and we don’t just endanger ourselves. Making excuses and blaming other’s doesn’t excuse bad behavior. Honesty is the first step toward freedom. Once we get honest about the problem, we become willing to pursue the solution.

In the beginning of recovery I wondered what I’d do for fun. As my drinking increased, it eclipsed all other interests and so I was at a loss about what I would do to occupy my time.

Over all, we find we have more fun in recovery, not less! We make new friends, pursue interests old and new, and we have energy and the attention required to set and achieve goals.
