We could talk a lot about the contribution of mothers to building future generations but one of the most important is breastfeeding. If you think it is simply a matter of providing nutrition to a child; think again.

Breastfeeding isn’t just feeding – it’s nurturing, caring and providing all rolled in one. Here are 7 awesome breastfeeding facts to know!

Your mucus plug is a thick piece of mucus that blocks the opening of your cervix during pregnancy. It forms a seal to prevent bacteria and infection from getting into your uterus and reaching the fetus. You can think of it as a protective barrier between your va**na and your uterus. An increase in pregnancy hormones like progesterone form the mucus plug. You can only form this plug when you’re pregnant.

You’ll lose your mucus plug as your cervix begins to dilate (open) and efface (soften and thin) in preparation for labor and delivery.🙌🏽

Ever wondered what causes pregnancy weight gain? 🤰 It’s not just about the baby! Your body goes through incredible changes: your uterus and breasts get larger, you carry stores of fat and nutrients, and the placenta, amniotic fluid, and increased blood volume all add to the scale. You can most definitely eat during early labor!🤰🏽💛💜

Listen, I'm not saying eat a 5 course meal. 😂

It shouldn't be anything heavy. I usually say don't eat anything that wouldn't be so bad if it came back up because vomiting is very common in labor.

With that being said you need to eat something during labor because -

➡️The uterus is a muscle.
➡️Muscles need energy.
➡️Energy comes from food.

You'll mostly eat in the early part of labor; once you're in the active part of labor you're typically not hungry.

**I know that many doctors are uncomfortable with people eating in labor because of the (very VERY low) risk of something called aspiration in the event of general anesthesia for a cesarean.

➡️So, eat a little something before you head to the hospital (assuming you're low risk).

Did you know that during the 1800s, moving around during labor was gradually eliminated? The positions in which women gave birth went from standing, squatting, and being on hands and knees to lying flat.

Being in an upright position during your labor can help you:

1. Have an easier and shorter labor by allowing gravity to assist baby down through the birth canal.🤰🏽

2. Widen your pelvic outlet, allowing more space for baby to move through your birth canal.👶🏽

3. Decrease your need for medical interventions.🩺💉

4. Decrease your need for pain medication.💊

5. Give you a sense of power and strength.💪🏽

Did you know that pitocin is a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin? Oxytocin is released by your own body and, causes your uterus to contract when it’s TIME for your baby to prepare for birth. Pitocin is used most times during inductions and sometimes during labor to speed up the process.🤦🏽‍♀️ Why does the process of labor need to be sped up?🧐 Pitocin makes your contractions stronger and more frequent than they would be if your body was allowed to do what it does naturally. If it’s not monitored properly, it can lead to hyper stimulation of your uterus, which can cause your baby to get into distress because of lack of oxygen. Then comes the c-section, because now they have to get the baby out quickly. What damage will this cause? What long term affects will this have on you and/or your baby?

The process of giving birth does not have to be rushed. Your body has everything that it needs to get your baby here when it’s time.💜
