Let’s talk about something most new moms experience, but few get warned about: Lactogenesis II, hormones, and that emotional rollercoaster after birth.
Around 2–5 days postpartum, your body shifts into Lactogenesis II—aka when your milk “comes in.” This happens because of a sharp drop in progesterone after the placenta is delivered, while prolactin (the milk-making hormone) rises. Amazing, right?
But here’s what’s rarely discussed:
That same hormonal shift can also hit your emotions hard. Many moms feel overwhelmed, teary, anxious, or sad—even if breastfeeding is going well. It’s not just exhaustion—it’s biology. Your brain is adjusting to a massive endocrine shift. This is sometimes referred to as the “Baby Blues”.
“Baby Blues” is completely normal with this hormone shift, but if it feels like too much or lasts longer than a few weeks, talk to your OBGYN about medication or getting a referral to counseling. You’re not alone, and support is out there. Reach out.
This is normal, but it’s also real.
You’re not weak, broken, or failing—you’re human.
Mamas, you’re doing an incredible job. Your body is doing miraculous, messy, powerful things. Be gentle with yourself.
