5 sweet WWM babes welcomed by Midwife Jordan in April.

A sweet friend (who also works alongside me as a doula) welcomed her 5th baby at home. This was her fourth VBAC (first HBAC) & seeing her surrounded by her other children, amazing husband & mother, and birth team was such a beautiful thing to witness.

A first time mama welcomed her sweet baby boy after a VERY swift labor. We had been at this families home that morning for a home visit and she was comfortable and thinking she still had awhile before she would meet baby. 7 hours later we rushed back to her home where she quickly welcomed her baby earth side with the support of her amazingly attentive husband & birth team.

A sweet mom welcomed her fourth baby at home. This was her second home birth & she did so well following her body and surrendering to labor. Her husband caught their baby on her bedroom floor as I knelt by for support and encouragement.

A second time mama who had very specific prayers surrounding her birth. Her first baby was born in a birth center & she was ready to welcome this sweet babe at home. Surrounded by her husband, daughter, friend and birth team-she peacefully welcomed her second daughter earth side. She caught her daughter in her birth tub as I sat by for support. God answered so many prayers through this birth down to the specific “birth day”.

A first time mama that had about 2 days of prodromal/early labor. When active labor started she sped through and welcomed her sweet (chunky) 9+ pound baby boy earth side after just 4 hours! We spent the next few hours in awe of Gods perfect plan & answer to so many prayers.

May is shaping up to be a beautiful month & we can’t wait to see the many blessings to come.

Tomorrow is International Day of the Midwife and the perfect day to celebrate allllll the amazing midwives out there!

Today I’m choosing to celebrate my midwife. The amazing .tanashia. She empowered me through not one, but two pregnancies. She taught me what true prenatal care & birth should look like. She helped build a passion in me that ultimately led me to opening WWM.

I’m thankful for her, and for all the amazing midwives who mentored me, loved me & helped me grow as a provider.

If a midwife has ever had an impact on your life, share with us in the comments.

Enjoying some slow quiet time after a beautiful birth early this morning.

We often talk about the beauty and blessings that comes with being a midwife, but I think there’s also space here to be real and transparent. This work can be so hard.

The hours
The on call schedule
The demand
The sleepless nights

But, God covers it all. He provides rest. Just like He did this morning as my birth last night was followed by my usual Friday off.

He’s given me a husband & family who knows my sometimes daunting schedule and steps in to keep things afloat while I’m gone. And then continues to provide a buffer when I need to come straight home to rest

He’s surrounded me with women, likeminded providers, and the absolute best birth team. I say it all the time, this is not a one man show. I couldn’t do what I do without the support of my team-who are also some of my best friends.

I’m also convinced that I have the absolute best clients. Understanding when there needs to be adjustments in my schedule to allow for rest & recovery time so that I can continue showing up for families.

Midwifery is hard. It’s sometimes daunting. It isn’t always “instagram pretty”.

But it’s my calling & I’m just honored to be here 🫶🏻

Often people ask me what training or degrees you have to have to become a midwife. There’s actually not a short or easy answer to that question.

There’s a few different routes to become a midwife. And what route you take depends on your state laws, desired work environment (hospital vs out of hospital), and background.

Because I originally started out as a labor and delivery nurse, and then went on to become a Nurse Practitioner I obtained my Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) degree. From there I went on to get my Doctorate in Nursing practices and was working a comfortable life in the hospital setting.

That was before God stepped in & completely changed the desires of my heart. When I transitioned from hospital midwife to out of hospital midwife I then had to get my Certified Professional Midwifery (CPM) credentials to work in Alabama (because of difficult state laws for Nurse Practitioners).

So I now work in 2 different states, under 2 different license.

All that to say….this morning I had to renew my Florida APRN (Nurse Practitioner) license. I procrastinated until the last minute, as I usually do. And it made me realize that I am currently having to uphold…..

An Alabama RN license
LM (licensed midwife) in Alabama
A Florida RN multicompact license
A Florida APRN (CNM) license
American midwifery board certification
Certified professional midwifery certification (NARM)

Sooooo if you ask me how I went about becoming a midwife, or what type training that entails….this is why my answers are often “it’s just a lot”🙃

I met with a sweet couple last week for a consultation. I always ask why the parents are interested in home birth. The dad expressed how he wanted his babies birth to be celebrated & treated like the blessing that it is, not just a casual event.

That got me to thinking about my approach to pregnancy, labor & birth. I know that each & every client who walks in to my office is living in such an important time of their life. While this is my “job” and I get to witness this beautiful miracle often, to the parents this is so much more.

Transformation.
Surrender.
New Life.
Birthing a baby.
Birthing a new version of a mother.
Love that only parents can have for their child.

I pray that I never get jaded or numb when it comes to this work. I pray that my heart always stays joyful & true.

Because pregnancy, labor & birth isn’t just a casual event, but a space that God has provided to show His goodness & mercy. His unfailing love & mighty hand. His peace & faithfulness.

And I pray that generations to come get to see birth as transformative & holy. Just as God designed it.

From the first contraction to the first breath earth-side. All in the environment you feel most comfortable. We love supporting our mama & babies with care that is tailored to their needs.

From calmly supporting a mama in labor to gently examine a newborn after birth. Midwifery care can be thorough & gentle.

Peaceful & protected.
Supported & Safe.
Quiet & loving.

So incredibly grateful to be in this sacred space🫶🏻

We often talk about how midwifery involves holding mothers. Just as importantly, midwifery care is also holding space.

I often say— to the medical person, midwifery would probably appear as neglectful care. Because its care that is sometimes unseen. The quiet scenarios playing through our head. The thorough assessments that we can make just by laying our eyes on a mama (and baby). The support we provide to a mama just by being….quiet & undisturbed. The hours and hours of prenatal care that has led to the relationship, to where my near presence is a safety and comfort. Not loud. Not disturbed. Not overbearing or egotistical.

Hands off. Patience. Gentle nudges & guidance with the respect & understanding if the answer is no.

Holding space where a family can feel supported. Where they can feel freedom and respect. Because at the end of the day, she knows what’s best for her baby & she knows how to birth, if only given the space 🫶🏻

I’ve attended the birth of all of these sweet boys🥹

Witnessed their mama as she’s grown life & brought life forward 3 times now.

What an honor it is to be invited in to such a sacred space, and then be asked to walk through this beautiful journey again & again.

It’s the clients that feel like friends/family that just makes this work so extra special & sustainable.
