There's a reason autistic people can experience burnout due to masking.

[Image description: Honeydew explains masking to a friend. The comic is titled "Masking Job" and is made by Theresa Scovil.

Panel 1:
A friend happily asks Honeydew "Could you explain masking to me? I want to have a better understanding."
Honeydew smiles.
Panel 2:
Honeydew says "Sure. Have you ever worked in retail?"
The friend looks confused as they say "Yeah?"
Panel 3:
Honeydew says "Masking is like being in perpetual customer service mode."
Panel 4:
Honeydew continues. "You have to modify your behaviour to placate everyone around you to avoid reprimand."
Panel 5:
Honeydew goes on. "You also have to endure when you're uncomfortable. Any respite is often frowned upon."
Panel 6:
Honeydew finishes off by saying "Masking is like being an unpaid retail worker."
The friend looks shocked as they say "Oh. Oh god."]

Transitions of any kind can be difficult- season changes especially. When change is coming, preparation and introducing change slowly (small bursts or short durations initially) can be helpful.

Newest barrier activity to target both expressive communication and listening with our play partner! Plus teamwork, pretend play, sharing, taking turns, problem solving, and so much more. Learning through play is the best! ❤️

One partner plays an instructor role, and one partner takes the tasker role. The “instructor” has the answer sheet and will tell the tasker what color/shape pieces they need while the “tasker” places the pieces into the correct location based on the instruction. Only the instructor can see the colored answer sheet. The tasker has the blank sheet. This could get pretty challenging depending on how well each person performs their role. Will the tasker put it in the correct orientation? Will they put it in the right spot? Can the instructor help their tasker complete the job? Let’s see!
