Today, we recognize ACOM student Michael Hamper, OMS-I, for his journey with Kleine-Levin Syndrome, an extremely rare neurological condition that affects only a small number of people worldwide.

Michael has faced unpredictable episodes of hypersomnia and severe cognitive changes since his early teens. His journey has included hospital stays, extensive testing, and a diagnosis with no definitive treatment. He has missed milestones, celebrations, and ordinary moments that many take for granted. Yet through it all, he chose to turn his experience into action.

Michael has dedicated himself to rare disease advocacy, research, and patient education. He reads the latest literature, contributes to publications, supports families navigating the condition, and works to ensure future physicians remain informed about diseases they may only encounter once in their careers.

Behind every rare diagnosis is a story of resilience. Today, we honor his.

On National Rare Disease Day, we are proud to highlight two ACOM students whose personal journeys with rare diseases are strengthening their commitment to advocacy, research, and compassionate patient care.

We are honored to share the story of ACOM student Andrea Gathercole, OMS-II. For years, Andrea lived with retinal tears, multiple surgeries, joint pain, and symptoms that never quite made sense together. During her first year of medical school, while reviewing a patient case in neurolab, she experienced a life changing realization. The symptoms in the case mirrored her own history. That moment set her on a path of research, self-advocacy, and genetic testing that ultimately led to a diagnosis of Brittle Cornea Syndrome, a subtype of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Andrea not only found answers for herself, but for her parents as well. Now, she proudly calls herself a zebra and is using her voice to advocate for stronger education around connective tissue disorders in medical training. Her goal is simple and powerful. Equip future physicians to recognize rare diseases sooner so patients do not spend decades searching for answers.

Her stripes are now part of her purpose.
