Nichols Center: Families of Recovery

Nichols Center: Families of Recovery Helping families heal through recovery and wellness in Douglas County and greater West Georgia areas.

Our non-profit community based organization helps families affected by substance abuse and addiction. Recovery can be a long and difficult path, but it is one that you do not have to walk alone. We are families helping families, by reaching out to our community to educate, support, and empower the families of Douglas County; the Nichols Center will provide guided treatment planning, community linkage, and family support promoting "clean" healthy choices. Through providing substance abuse prevention education, parenting education, and weekly support meetings we can impact drug and relapse rates creating a safer home environment for our families.

The days are running together as we continue to connect with so many amazing organizations and people. We visited the refuge camp today. The drive through the mountains is breathtaking. The children make my heart so happy as they wave at us…they call us “travelers” in their native language and shout “how are you….you are welcome!” 🤗

Today marked day six in Otici Village, where the dedicated teachers of The Legacy School completed a six‑hour workshop on trauma resilience. Together, we explored how trauma shapes student behavior and impacts child development, and their openness and commitment moved me deeply. It was an honor to sit with educators whose hearts are so full of love for their students, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to bring this level of training to their country.

Day 2 – Helping Women Heal 💛
Today was a powerful day at Shekinah Church, where I had the privilege of speaking about women’s mental health, family principles, and breaking cycles of trauma. For many women here, standing up against domestic violence or raising a family alone can be deeply challenging — often accompanied by shame and little support from their communities.
We spent time with families discussing the power of kindness, both toward others and ourselves. We explored how trauma forms and how one brave choice to confront abuse can begin to heal generations of suffering. These women, caring for their families in the face of so much hardship, are shaping a better future with remarkable courage.
Our team was able to provide the church with a new dry erase board — a small step toward expanding their teaching tools. Together, we’re helping leaders learn how to mentor other families using trauma-informed lessons. Their dream is to create a vocational school where women and children can learn trades and build sustainable futures. With the team, we’re committed to supporting their vision and growing mental health awareness in the heart of Kampala.
Every woman I met today carried stories of pain, but also incredible strength and hope. They are eager to learn, to heal, and to help others do the same. I leave today feeling deeply grateful and inspired by their resilience and light. 🌿✨

Day 1 – Settling In 🌍
After landing in Ethiopia yesterday and a short final flight, I’ve arrived in Uganda 🇺🇬! The countryside is breathtaking, with endless greenery and life everywhere you look. As we drove through the city, the streets were alive — families washing clothes by the roadside creeks, women carrying baskets effortlessly balanced on their heads, and children laughing and playing nearby.
Uganda recently held its presidential election, and with the occasional Internet blackout, it took a moment to get reconnected. But even offline, the country’s beauty speaks for itself. The lush landscape and vibrant plants feel so familiar — they remind me of home at the Center. Nana 🥰 would absolutely adore the incredible variety of trees and flowers here.
We ended the day with an amazing dinner at a local restaurant and, of course, some of the richest coffee imaginable ☕️.
I can already see why so many people fall in love with this incredible place. 💚

GACA is leading the legislative efforts to pass language contained in SB 277 to revise the detinition of drugs, in the Georgia Code, to include alcohol and its derivatives.

The new definition will help to save lives, impact families and clinical providers. thus allowing tor the treatment of Alcohol use disorder as a stand alone diagnosis.

The Facts

• Currently, the definition of drugs under GA Code prevents licensed residential treatment centers, Intensive Outpatient Programs and Partial Hospitalization Programs from treating Alcohol Use Disorders as a stand-alone illness.

• Alcohol Use Disorder is the second leading cause of death by substance use disorders.

• The National Institute of Health, The National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Center for Disease Control all define alcohol as a drug.
