Nichols Center: Families of Recovery

Nichols Center: Families of Recovery Helping families heal through recovery and wellness in Douglas County and greater West Georgia areas.

Our non-profit community based organization helps families affected by substance abuse and addiction. Recovery can be a long and difficult path, but it is one that you do not have to walk alone. We are families helping families, by reaching out to our community to educate, support, and empower the families of Douglas County; the Nichols Center will provide guided treatment planning, community linkage, and family support promoting "clean" healthy choices. Through providing substance abuse prevention education, parenting education, and weekly support meetings we can impact drug and relapse rates creating a safer home environment for our families.

We’re celebrating service, growth, and community this month at the Nichols Center! 🌿

Tara Nichols was honored as the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce’s Sam P. Robert Volunteer of the Year for her incredible work building safe, trauma‑informed spaces for families across our community—from the ballpark to the courts, to outreach and crisis support. Tara’s leadership embodies our mission of “helping families heal through wellness and recovery.”

In Uganda, our team is expanding mental health education in schools, conducting student well‑being check‑ins and partnering with local educators to build a sustainable framework of care for youth. Back home, our Helping Families Heal Clinical Cohort—supported by the Vera Institute for Justice Grant—continues to provide free, trauma‑informed mental health services to justice‑involved families and those connected to the Trinity Center.

In 2026, we’re deepening our commitment through livestream events, online training, and our membership platform, making trauma‑informed tools more accessible than ever.

Join us at the Educational Summit on Friday, March 20 to learn practical skills in trauma‑informed care, crisis response, and community wellness.

Nichols Center was honored to launch the Location Managers Guild’s quarterly training series last night, advancing the conversation around mental health in Georgia’s film and television industry. Tara Nichols delivered the opening session of this four-part program, introducing our Take 8 initiative, which focuses on proactive crisis response and su***de prevention strategies tailored to location managers and their teams.
The session highlighted practical approaches for embedding mental health awareness into daily production workflows, fostering safer, healthier, and more sustainable work environments for industry professionals. This Black History Month, we proudly honor Francis Cecil Sumner.

Dr. Sumner made history as the first black man to earn a Ph.D. in Psychology, breaking barriers in a field where opportunities for African Americans were limited and often denied. But his legacy extends far beyond that historic achievement.

Known as the “Father of Black Psychology,” Dr. Sumner dedicated his career to teaching, mentoring, and opening doors for other young Black scholars. He trained and inspired generations of students in psychology, helping to lay the academic and professional foundation for those who would follow. His commitment to excellence, education, and empowerment transformed not only individual lives, but the field of psychology itself.

Because of Dr. Sumner’s courage and commitment, countless black psychologists were able to pursue careers in research, teaching, and service.

This month, we celebrate his brilliance, his resilience, and his lasting impact. His legacy reminds us that one person’s determination can create opportunity for generations to come.
