Tinea corporis, commonly called ringworm, is a common fungal skin infection, not a worm.

It often appears as a round or ring-shaped rash with a raised, scaly edge and clearer skin in the center. It can be itchy and may spread through close contact, shared towels, clothing, or sports equipment.

Many cases improve with antifungal creams, but some rashes need prescription treatment or further evaluation especially if they’re spreading, not improving, or located on the scalp or face.

Not sure if a rash could be a ringworm? Call our office or send us a message through the portal so we can guide you on treatment and next steps.

A well check is meant to focus on preventive care like growth, development, routine screenings, and age-based guidance.

Sometimes a child also has a new concern that needs a separate evaluation during that same appointment. Examples might include an ear infection, a rash that needs a diagnosis and treatment plan, wheezing, a prolonged cough, abdominal pain, or a mental health concern that requires additional history and decision-making.

When a significant new problem is evaluated and managed at the well visit, it may be billed as both:

1) the preventive visit (the well check), and

2) an additional problem-focused visit (often listed as a sick visit)

This is not about charging twice for the same care. It reflects that two different types of services were provided in one appointment.

If you have questions about a bill from Dover Pediatrics, call our billing team. We are happy to walk through the charges, how your insurance processed the visit, and what applies to your copay or deductible.

Is it time for my child to have a cell phone?

There’s no single “right age” for a first cell phone. Readiness depends more on maturity, responsibility, and family needs than grade level alone. Consider whether your child can follow rules, manage screen time without constant reminders, and understand basic safety around texting, social media, and online interactions.

If you decide to start, set clear boundaries from the beginning such as where the phone is stored at night, screen time limits, which apps are allowed, and expectations around school and family time.

Ongoing conversations about digital safety, kindness, and privacy are just as important as the device itself.

If parents want a good book resource, Gina Apgar from our behavioral health team recommends “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt.

Set expectations before the phone is handed over and revisit those rules regularly as your child grows. If you need help figuring out what parental controls are needed, chat with a provider at your next visit.

A preventive visit (well visit) focuses on routine care such as growth and development, vaccines, screenings, and age-appropriate guidance.

A problem-focused visit addresses specific concerns like ongoing symptoms, new illnesses, behavior concerns, medication adjustments, or chronic condition management.

If new or significant medical issues are discussed and evaluated during a preventive visit, both services may be billed. This is because the time, medical decision-making, and documentation required for addressing a problem go beyond routine preventive care.

Understanding the difference helps avoid surprises and ensures concerns are fully addressed.

Ask about visit types and billing ahead of time so you know what to expect. Our billing team has an abundance of knowledge to answer all of your questions. Do not hesitate to reach out.

Before the Hib vaccine, Haemophilus influenzae type B was a leading cause of bacterial meningitis, pneumonia, and life-threatening infections in young children.

Thousands of kids were hospitalized each year, and many were left with permanent complications such as hearing loss or brain injury.

Vaccination dramatically changed that story making Hib disease rare in countries with strong immunization programs.

Keeping children up to date on routine vaccines helps protect them and prevents these serious infections from returning.

Toddlers are still learning balance and coordination, so minor falls and bumps are very common, especially as they climb, run, and explore.

Most small tumbles are harmless and don’t require medical care.

However, call your provider or seek care if you notice red flags such as repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, behavior changes, loss of consciousness, severe headache, or difficulty walking.

Trust your instincts. Parents often know when something doesn’t feel right.

If you’re ever unsure after a fall, give our office a call. Remember we are available 24-7.

Springing forward can be tough on sleep routines.

A few days before the time changes, try moving bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes each night. Morning sunlight and keeping routines consistent can also help kids adjust.

Temporary sleep disruption is normal, and most children settle back in within a week.

If sleep struggles linger, let us know and we are happy to help.

March is National Nutrition Month, and snacks can play a big role in fueling growing bodies.

For toddlers, think soft fruits, yogurt, or cheese. School-age kids often do well with combos like apple slices and peanut butter or hummus and crackers.

Teens may need heartier snacks like trail mix or smoothies.
Balance matters more than perfection, and all foods can fit.

What are your go-to kid-friendly snacks? Share below.

Our after-hours nurse line is here to support you when your child is sick or you have questions outside of regular office hours.

Our office staff and physicians take calls directly through the evening, but overnight our nurse line handles the calls. Simply call our main office number, and you’ll be directed to the nurse line.

The nurse can help with advice on symptoms, guidance for care at home, or whether your child needs to be seen the next day.

When to go straight to the ER:
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if your child has trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, severe bleeding, signs of a serious allergic reaction, high fever in an infant under 1 month old, or any sudden, severe symptoms.

Tip: Keep our office number saved so you know exactly what number to call.
