Picky eating is common in toddlers and usually part of normal development. Encouraging variety can take patience: offer new foods alongside familiar favorites, involve your child in meal prep, and model healthy eating yourself. Avoid pressure or punishment—positive exposure over time is more effective than forcing a bite.

Provider Tip: Dr. Davie recommends offering only a tiny, bite-sized piece when introducing a new food - or if your child didn’t like it the last time. Toddlers are visual eaters, so if a food looks unfamiliar or intimidating, they’re less likely to try it.

Need strategies tailored to your picky eater? Call our office for guidance and practical tips to make mealtime less stressful.

Sports physicals focus on evaluating your teen’s readiness to participate safely in athletics.

They usually include vital signs, musculoskeletal checks, and basic health questions. Wellness visits are more comprehensive, covering growth, mental health, immunizations, preventive screenings, and overall well-being. Both types of visits are important for keeping teens healthy.

Did you know? If your teen has had a wellness visit within the past year, it can also serve as a sports physical. Call our office to request a sports physical form, and please allow 72 hours for completion.

AAP President Dr. Susan J. Kressly responds to the recent changes on the CDC’s website - “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website has been changed to promote false information suggesting vaccines cause autism. Since 1998, independent researchers across seven countries have conducted more than 40 high-quality studies involving over 5.6 million people. The conclusion is clear and unambiguous: There’s no link between vaccines and autism. Anyone repeating this harmful myth is misinformed or intentionally trying to mislead parents.

We call on the CDC to stop wasting government resources to amplify false claims that sow doubt in one of the best tools we have to keep children healthy and thriving: routine immunizations. The American Academy of Pediatrics stands with members of the autism community who have asked for support in stopping this rumor from spreading any further."

At Dover Pediatrics, we practice evidence based medicine. There have been many many studies all with the same conclusion: vaccines do not cause autism. Vaccines keep children healthy.

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month which is a time to raise understanding and support for children living with seizures.

A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which can cause changes in movement, behavior, awareness, or sensation.

If your child ever has a seizure, here are a few steps to keep them safe:
- Stay calm and gently place them on their side.
- Do not put anything in their mouth.
- Move objects away to prevent injury.
- Time the seizure. If it lasts longer than 5 minutes, call 911 immediately.

If your child has experienced a seizure or you’re concerned about unusual episodes, call our office.

Grade schoolers are learning to recognize and manage their emotions, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. Encourage open conversations about feelings, model healthy coping strategies, and validate your child’s experiences.

Teaching problem-solving and stress management skills at this stage helps children build resilience and confidence. Encourage your child to manage stress by taking deep breaths, talking about their feelings, or using drawing or journaling to express emotions.

If your child struggles with emotional regulation or frequent mood changes, call our office. We can offer strategies, resources, and referrals if needed. We can also connect you with one of our two behavioral health providers in our office.

Vaccines do more than protect your individual child - they help prevent the spread of disease to classmates, family members, and the community.

Immunizations reduce outbreaks, protect vulnerable populations, like newborns and the elderly, and keep children healthy so they can attend school and activities safely.

Stay up to date on your child’s vaccines. Call our office to schedule or review their immunization status today.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique journey of babies born too soon and the strength of their families. Life after the NICU can feel overwhelming, with many follow-up appointments, therapies, and ongoing care needs.

Every baby’s journey is different, and support looks different for each family.

Our office is here to help coordinate care for your premature baby, including referrals to early intervention, ophthalmology, and developmental specialists.

We also have our lactation specialist Dawn to help with feeding after discharge for families direct breastfeeding or pumping breastmilk.

If your child was born prematurely, give us a call so we can make sure your family has the right support in place for your baby’s growth and development.
