Mental health is an important part of overall health for children, teens, and parents.

Counseling is not only for times of crisis—it can also help with everyday challenges such as big emotions, behavior changes, stress, and life transitions. Talking with a trained professional provides support, tools, and strategies to help families navigate these experiences.

Normalizing conversations about mental health helps children and teens feel more comfortable asking for help when they need it.

Dr. Laramee says mental health checkups are like oil changes for your car. We do not wait until the car breaks down to get the oil changed. We make sure we are changing the oil regularly to keep it running well. Mental health care works the same way, regular support can help prevent bigger concerns over time.

We have 2 behavioral health professionals in our office to help with mental health. They do not do traditional counseling but can do short-term skill building, assist in crisis situations, and help connect you with local resources.
Please call us or send a portal message for more information.

Young children explore the world by touching and tasting, which makes poisoning prevention especially important in the toddler years.

Medicines, vitamins, cleaning products, and other household chemicals should always be stored out of reach and ideally locked away. Child-resistant caps can help, but they are not childproof.

Avoid leaving medications on counters or in bags where children can access them, and keep products in their original containers so labels and instructions remain clear.

If a child may have swallowed something harmful, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for immediate guidance. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that children may make without meaning to.

They can include movements such as eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, or facial grimacing, and sounds like throat clearing, sniffing, or humming.

Tics are fairly common in school-age children and often appear during times of stress, excitement, fatigue, or illness. In many cases, they are temporary and improve over time.

It may be helpful to have your child evaluated if tics are frequent, last longer than several months, cause distress, or begin to interfere with school, social interactions, or daily activities.

Tip from Dr. Ryan Johnson: Capture the concerning movement or noise on video and bring it to your child’s next appointment. Seeing the video can help us determine if it is a tic or something else.

The patient portal is a convenient way for families to stay connected with their child’s care. Through the portal, you can send messages to the care team, request medication refills, review lab and test results, schedule well visits or same-day sick visits, fill out pre-visit questionnaires and access important documents such as health forms or immunization records.

Using the portal can help families manage routine healthcare needs without needing to call the office during busy hours. It also provides a secure way to communicate with the care team and keep track of your child’s health information.

Please remember the portal is only monitored during regular business hours. Portal messages may take 2-3 days for a response. If you need an answer quickly, the best way to reach us is to call the office.

If you need help accessing or setting up your patient portal account, contact Dover Pediatrics and our team can assist you.

When lab tests or imaging studies are ordered, our team reviews the results carefully before sharing them with families. Depending on the type of test, results may take a few days to return, while some specialized tests may take longer.

Once results are available and reviewed by the provider, families are typically notified through the patient portal or by phone. In some cases, you may see results appear in the hospital portal before the provider has had a chance to review them and contact you.

It is also important to know that many laboratory systems display normal ranges based on adult values. Because children have different normal ranges depending on age, you may see results marked as abnormal that are actually normal for your child’s age.

If you have not heard about your child’s results within the expected timeframe discussed at the visit, contact Dover Pediatrics so we can review the status and ensure nothing was missed.

The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

Most people receive their first Tdap dose around age 11, which means the next tetanus-containing booster is typically due about 10 years later, around age 21.

As young adults reach their early twenties, it is a good time to review immunization records and make sure boosters are up to date. The Tdap booster can usually be given at a primary care office, pharmacy, or student health center.

If you are unsure whether your Tdap booster is up to date, contact Dover Pediatrics and we can review your immunization record.

Social media is a regular part of many teens’ lives, but it can also come with challenges such as screen time overload, online pressure, and privacy concerns.

Open conversations at home can help teens think critically about what they see online and how it affects their mood, sleep, and self-esteem.

Families may find it helpful to set a few shared boundaries, such as limiting screen time before bed, keeping phones out of bedrooms overnight, and discussing what information is safe to share online.

Encouraging offline activities like sports, hobbies, and in-person time with friends can also help create a healthier balance.

Talking regularly about online experiences can help teens feel supported and better prepared to navigate the digital world.

Need help on how to handle social media with your teen? We are here to help. Reach out to chat with a member of our medical team.

Spring break trips are a great opportunity for families to relax and explore new places. A little preparation can help keep everyone healthy while traveling.

Encourage regular handwashing, especially before eating and after being in crowded places. Sun protection is also important, including sunscreen, hats, and staying hydrated throughout the day.

When traveling, pay attention to food and water safety by choosing well-cooked foods and safe drinking water when needed. It can also be helpful to pack a small travel health kit with items such as fever reducer, bandages, hand sanitizer, and any regular medications your child may need.

If your child has specific medical needs or you are traveling internationally, consider calling ahead of time to discuss recommended precautions or vaccines before your trip.

04/12/2026

Introducing common food allergens is an important step when babies begin eating solid foods. Foods such as peanut, egg, dairy, wheat, soy, and fish are often introduced during the first year of life. Current guidance supports introducing these foods once a baby is developmentally ready for solids, typically around 6 months.

When introducing a new allergen, offer it in a safe form and when your baby is healthy and you can closely supervise.

For example, peanut can be mixed as a small amount of smooth peanut butter thinned into a puree the baby has already tolerated. After introducing a new allergen, watch for signs of a reaction such as hives, swelling, vomiting, coughing, or difficulty breathing.

If your baby has severe eczema, known food allergies, or a family history of allergies, it may be helpful to discuss introduction plans with your provider.

Do you have questions about introducing allergen foods? Contact Dover Pediatrics for individualized guidance.

04/08/2026

Roseola is a common viral illness seen in infants and young children, most often between 6 months and 2 years of age. It typically begins with a high fever that lasts for several days, sometimes with mild symptoms like irritability or decreased appetite.

Once the fever resolves, a pink or light red rash often appears on the chest, back, or abdomen and may spread to the neck and arms.

The rash itself usually does not bother the child and often fades within one to two days.

Most children recover quickly and return to normal activities once the fever has resolved.

Call the office if the fever lasts longer than expected, if your child appears very ill, has difficulty staying hydrated, or if you have concerns about the rash or other symptoms.
