Re: My (Mark’s) Retirement

Thank you very much for all of your kind thoughts. It was a surprise event, as I had said I did not want any recognition. I think back often on all the families I have met with, as well as the co-workers, friends, and colleagues along the way. I have tried to do my best. Some days were better than others; I have learned much and appreciate it all. I need to take a moment to acknowledge a few “funeral people,” most gone now, who had a profound influence on me and my career, making me better at what I do, and, in turn, benefitting many grieving families: First, my mom and dad, owners of a small funeral home in North Canton, who taught me about hard work and empathy. There were also Dave Hughes, Vance Harris, and Tim Barnes in Athens; Ann Spiker Foster in Canton; Rich Geib Sr. and “young” Rich in New Philadelphia; and Dick and John Herzig in Dover. I also need to include Anna Lee Brendza and Lee Morrison from The Times-Reporter. These extraordinary folks, and so many others, are always with me. It is a sad business, to be sure, but good things happen too. Thanks again. I love you all and wish you the very best.

Who We Are

At Toland-Herzig, we are equally comfortable planning services to be conducted within our own facilities or working in cooperation with area churches and other venues. We will be glad to assist and make calling hour and service suggestions based on our considerable experience. But our commitment is to you and your personal preferences. While some might discourage certain funeral customs and traditions, dismissing them as old fashioned or as needless ritual, we encourage you to plan arrangements that meet your specific needs and wishes. We believe tradition, after all, is to be respected. Early in 2005 we installed a Human and a Pet Crematory at our Dover Funeral Home to better serve the needs of area families and their pets. This crematory is licensed and inspected by the State of Ohio, meticulously maintained, and operated by a highly-trained staff certified by the Cremation Association of North America. Your loved one is treated with the utmost respect and never leaves our care. You are assured that the cremated remains you receive are those of your loved one – and that peace-of-mind is priceless. Our Dover location has also become quite a tourist attraction with the growth of our Famous Endings Museum, the world's largest privately owned collection of funeral memorabilia from services of the famous. We had the honor of being Ohio's 2010 enshrinee into the National Funeral Directors Association's Hall of Excellence.
