I had a prenatal client yesterday who was curious about the benefits of abdominal massage during pregnancy. I explained that as the baby expands and takes up space in our body there is less room and our organs can get a little bit squished and uncomfortable and it can become more difficult to take full deep breaths. Massage can help expand and create more space, opening up the ribs and diaphragm for easier breathing. It can also help with digestion, circulation and lymph flow. Another benefit is prevention of stretch marks. Additionally, baby really seems to enjoy when mama's belly gets massaged as well and we can often feel movement and kicking. If you're getting massages during pregnancy, feel free to ask your therapist to work on this area.
