From Laboratory Equipment Magazine -The FDA has fast-tracked the use of convalescent plasma to treat critical coronavirus patients, and are working quickly toward convalescent plasma clinical trials from multiple investigators.

The treatment has only been approved on a case-by-case basis for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections through the process of single patient emergency Investigational New Drug Applications (eINDs) for Individual patients. This process allows the use of an investigational drug for the treatment of an individual patient by a licensed physician—upon FDA authorization.

While the FDA said it is still important to test the efficacy and safety of convalescent plasma, the health agency said it decided to facilitate access to the treatment “given the public health emergency that the expanding COVID-19 outbreak presents.”

In convalescent plasma treatment, the ill patient is transfused with the plasma of a surviving donor in the hopes that the donor’s antibodies will fight the virus. In the past, plasma has shown promise, being used most recently in 2014 during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and earlier in 2002 during the SARS epidemic. The treatment dates back to more than 100 years ago when it was used during the 1918 flu pandemic. Convalescent plasma was also used to treat measles and other bacterial infectious before the advent of vaccines.

So hard to believe that the Alert Monitoring System was installed 5 years ago!! So proud to be associated with Mothers' Milk Bank NE and to watch them grow in the Northeast!!

Here is Jeff from Hampshire Controls, our freezer monitoring company, to announce our new freezer names! Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! Here are the winners:
1. Bryson: in memory of baby Bryson, our first Angel Donor, and in honor of all families who have donated in memory of their babies
2. Rumina: the Roman goddess of breastfeeding, who makes milk flow and protects all nursing young
3. Halav: the Hebrew word for "milk." Many of you suggested a foreign word for "milk." Recently a mom helped her son put the "halav" in the freezer, and at first we thought he'd said "love," so we couldn't resist.
4. Bessie: the overwhelming crowd favorite!
5. Hope: because really, that is what we are all about.

A great read on an interesting topic - the future of ...

"... water is the first liquid to freeze & it causes cell dehydration — it damages an animal's organs. However, the Wood Frog's liver reacts to this process by creating an excess of glucose to prevent additional water from dehydrating cells. As a result, the frog never freezes on a cellular level despite appearing frozen from the outside.... Medical researchers are also still stumped by a very important step in the reanimation process: they have yet to determine how the wood frog triggers its heart to restart after being frozen." -Lindsay Gilder

Do you think these frogs hold the key to the future of cryogenics?

The North American Wood Frog can survive for 7 months while two-thirds of its body is completely frozen. Scientists are looking to this survival process for research in cryogenics and organ transplants.
