Lawrence’s recovery has been filled with hard work, strength, and strong support from his family. He first went to Kessler Chester for rehabilitation and was making great progress. But then, he got a serious respiratory infection that set him back. He had to go to the hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. Doctors also gave him a tracheostomy and a feeding tube.

Even with these challenges, Lawrence never gave up on his goal of going home. He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Morris County to begin breathing on his own again and continue healing.

When Lawrence arrived at Kindred, he still needed a ventilator with 35% oxygen. He needed help to stand up, move in bed, and do everyday tasks like getting dressed. But with his strong spirit, and his wife by his side every day, Lawrence stayed focused. His care team worked closely with him, and together, they made big progress.

Lawrence was able to come off the ventilator and started walking again. By the time he was discharged, he needed only a little help with moving and doing daily activities. He was even walking up to 90 feet, a major step forward!

The team at Kessler Chester stayed in touch during his stay at Kindred. Thanks to his steady progress, Lawrence was welcomed back to Kessler to keep building his strength and work toward full independence. “All of the staff at Kindred are kind, hardworking and motivated," shared Lawrence.

Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

In April, Robert was admitted to Kindred Morris County with significant medical challenges. Once a vibrant, independent salesman known for his quick wit and humor, Robert had experienced a sudden health decline that left him dependent on others for nearly every aspect of daily life.

Upon admission, Robert presented with multiple wounds and required a tracheostomy collar with 35% FiO2 to support his breathing. He was NPO (nothing by mouth) and relied solely on PEG tube feeds. Functionally, he was maximum assist for all bed mobility and required the assistance of two people just to perform a sit-to-stand transfer. He needed moderate assistance for upper body activities of daily living (ADLs) and was completely dependent for lower body ADLs. Despite these daunting obstacles, Robert’s resilience and sharp sense of humor never wavered. His jokes and positive outlook became a source of inspiration not only for the care team but also for fellow patients.

Over the weeks that followed, Robert made tremendous progress through the collaborative efforts of his medical team and his own unwavering determination. By the time of discharge, Robert had been decannulated, and all of his wounds were fully healed. He no longer needed his PEG tube, having transitioned to a regular diet with thin liquids and was eating independently. Functionally, the transformation was equally remarkable. Robert was ambulating 500 feet with a rolling walker, requiring only contact guard assistance. He had regained his ability to perform all upper and lower body ADLs with supervision, a dramatic shift from his initial level of dependence.

Today, Robert is excited about returning to the life he loves. "I can’t wait to get back to work," he shares with a smile, referencing his career in sales where his personality and energy truly shine. Robert’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, expert care, and the healing strength of humor. We are proud to have been part of his journey back to independence.

When Diane first arrived at Kindred Hospital Morris County, she was facing a steep uphill battle. Dependent on a high-flow nasal cannula delivering 50 liters of oxygen at 45%, she required maximum assistance for bed mobility and upper body care and was fully dependent for lower body tasks. She also required all nutrition through a nasogastric (NG) tube, with an uncertain road to recovery ahead.

But from day one, Diane was determined to fight. With the unwavering support of her devoted daughter by her side, she faced each therapy session with courage and perseverance. Despite fluctuations in her oxygen needs, Diane worked tirelessly with her physical and occupational therapy teams to rebuild her strength and regain her independence.

Her hard work paid off. Throughout her stay, Diane made remarkable progress. She was successfully weaned from high-flow oxygen to a nasal cannula at just 2 liters, and she’s remained stable ever since, with oxygen saturations consistently above 95%. Now, Diane is independent with bed mobility, walking up to 200 feet using a rolling walker, and requiring only contact guard assistance for her daily activities. Even more exciting, she’s back to enjoying a regular diet with thin liquids, a milestone that has brought both joy and a sense of normalcy.

Through it all, Diane’s positive spirit and deep love for her family have shone brightly. Her daughter has been a constant source of strength, cheering her on every step of the way. Now that Diane is feeling more like herself again, she’s looking forward to one of her favorite simple pleasures: a celebratory trip to Red Lobster.

Diane’s journey is one of strength, resilience, and hope, and a powerful reminder that with hard work, support, and determination, recovery is always within reach. Diane also shared, "The nursing staff is amazing. I am beyond grateful."
