The nursing community is mourning the loss of Dr. Janell Green Smith—a midwife, educator, and leader who dedicated her life to improving maternal care and supporting families through pregnancy and birth.

Dr. Green Smith passed away following complications after childbirth. Her passing has deeply impacted nurses, midwives, patients, and colleagues across the country.

As we honor her legacy, her loss is also renewing conversations nurses know too well—about maternal safety, postpartum care, and the importance of listening when something doesn’t feel right.

We hold her family, loved ones, and the communities she served in our hearts.

CMS repealed nursing home staffing law.

AHA applauds decision. Nurses disagree.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services removed the requirement for 3.48 hours of nursing care per resident daily.

That included 0.55 hours from an RN and 2.45 hours from a nurse aide.

The 24/7 onsite RN requirement? Also gone.

Now facilities only need an RN for eight consecutive hours daily, seven days a week.

The American Hospital Association applauded the move. They argued the mandate could "exacerbate workforce shortages" and "lead to facility closures," especially in rural areas.

But here's the tension healthcare workers feel: Was this really about protecting access to care? Or about protecting facility budgets?

The repeal aligns with a July budget bill that imposed a 10-year moratorium on enforcement. The industry got what it wanted.

Meanwhile, workers wonder what happens to residents when staffing stays at current levels.

Because "clinical judgment and flexibility" sounds reasonable until it becomes code for "stretch further with less."

If rural facilities can't meet minimum staffing, should the solution be more resources or lower standards?
