I love the many opportunities my job offers such as meeting and “listening” to the elderly.

During this past week, I took care of a WWII veteran who I have known for over 25 years and now have the honor to serve as a Nurse Practitioner to manage his health needs. It was a follow up visit for a simple cold; however, it turned into a long conversation and venting from his part. I listened to his joy and worries with family, illness, hobby, and life. I realized he didn’t need my input. He wasn’t asking for my opinion or advice. After this long talk, he thanked me for “talking to me”; even though I said nothing.

This lesson inspires me to continue being an active listener and help others offload some of the stress they carry. In nursing we call this “Therapeutic Listening”.

If you are interested in helping seniors take a look into your local community programs where you can volunteer to be a “Friendly Visitor” and help others find the social connection needed to thrive.

Me encantan las oportunidades que me ofrece mi trabajo como lo es conocer y escuchar a los ancianos.

La semana pasada me tocó atender un veterano de la segunda guerra mundial. He conocido a esta persona por más de 25 años pero ahora tengo el honor de servir como Enfermera Avanzada y manejar sus necesidades de salud. Lo que era un seguimiento de rutina para una gripe se convirtió en una larga conversación y desahogo de su parte. Le escuche sus alegrías y preocupaciones con su familia, enfermedades, hobbies, y la vida en general. Entendí que no necesitaba mi consejo o mi opinión. Después de esta charla larga, me agradeció por haberle “hablado” a pesar de que no dije nada.

Esta lección me inspira a seguir siendo una escuchante activa y ayudar a otros a desahogar la carga que llevan. En el campo de la enfermería este tipo de comunicación se conoce como el escuchar activamente.

Si usted quisiera ayudar a los ancianos a conectarse con la comunidad existen grupos de apoyo locales Los cuales aceptan voluntarios como lo es la organización El amigo Visitante las cuales ayudan a las personas a tener la socialización que les ayuda a salir adelante.
