Be cautious out there. It is very icy and cold. We were going to a memorial today for a high school friend who recently passed away but the weather makes it too dangerous. His dad was my chiropractor. Rest in peace Mike.

From Practical Pain Management: Volume 19, Issue 2
Efficacy of Chiropractic Care for Back Pain: A Clinical Summary
A comparative effectiveness controlled trial evaluated the addition of chiropractic care to usual medical care for patients suffering from low back pain.
By Christine Goertz, DC, PhD and Ian Coulter, PhD
Pages 64-65
Conclusion
This large multi-site pragmatic comparative effectiveness study found that adding chiropractic care to usual medical care resulted in better participant outcomes. By addressing weaknesses inherent in previous studies and providing further evidence to support LBP management that includes the integration of chiropractic care within a multidisciplinary health setting, these findings provide additional support for the use of chiropractic care as part of a multidisciplinary approach for patients suffering from low back pain.

Spring is here. With the advent of warmer weather, our creepy crawly critters will soon be out in full force. One of the most concerning is the tick. Deer ticks in particular can cause a myriad of conditions, one of which is Lyme's disease. Lyme's disease is caused by the bacteria borrelia burgdorferi. It's easy to pick up ticks while being outside, especially in areas with trees, tall grass, or brush. Ticks can also jump from pets to humans.

Lyme's signs and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes -- all common in the flu. In up to 80% of Lyme infections, a rash is one of the first symptoms. This rash appears as a bullseye at the site of the bite. Left untreated it can result in inflammatory arthritis in the joints.

Prevention:
1. Wear lighter colors when being in risky environments.
2. Inspect clothing and skin for tickets, which may look like a speck or a freckle. Have someone check your hair and areas not visible.
3. Check pets regularly. Vets have a preventative pill.
4. Use anti tick sprays when working outdoors.
5. Remove ticks immediately if found.
6. Check bedding if pets sleep with you.

Nerve entrapment syndromes can occur anywhere along the course of a nerve, but mostly they occur around joints. Entrapment points may be between vessels, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or bony structures.

Symptoms may include numbness and tingling and pain as well as weakness in muscles supplied by the nerve. Depending, of course, on the amount of entrapment pressure. Scar tissue resulting from trauma and postural issues may be a causative factor. Repetitive movement patterns may also result in entrapment syndromes.

For mild to moderate cases, conservative treatment can be effective. It may include mobilization techniques, nerve gliding, postural correction, rehabilitation exercises, soft tissue mobilization/manipulation, and activity modification. Laser and acupuncture may also be of benefit.

Severe entrapment generally requires surgical intervention.
