Our grandparents expended more than five times as many calories engaging in non-exercise physical activity. They didn't have fancy gym memberships.

Today, mechanical conveniences do most of our yard work, kitchen work, and household chores. (Anyone else have one of those robot vacuum cleaners?) We drive twice as many miles as we did in the 1970s, and fewer than 10% of our children walk to school, down from the high of 50%. Now, with online shopping, we don't even have to make the trip to the grocery store.

In contrast, blue zones residents are nudged into physical activity about every 20 minutes. That's why we asked our social community to tell us how they move naturally. Here's what they had to share ⬆️.

This week, take a cue from the longest-living people on Earth and get in some natural movenment!

From the least to the most pressure:
Laying down — Minimal spinal load — ~25% of standing pressure. Standing — Neutral spine bearing your body weight — considered baseline (100%). Sitting — Increases pressure to 140–185% depending on posture — especially worse when slouched or unsupported.

Spending long hours sitting — at a desk, driving, or on the couch produces constant compression that can add up — and over time, it can contribute to: Disc problems (bulges/herniations), chronic low back pain, sciatica, poor posture + muscular imbalances, neck and shoulder tension, early degenerative change. The good news is, little daily habits involving stretch breaks and movement can make a huge, positive impact on your health!
