Thanksgiving in America has its roots in the early 17th century. The most famous early celebration occurred in 1621, when the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony shared a harvest feast with the Wampanoag people. This meal, often seen as the “first Thanksgiving,” was a gesture of alliance and gratitude after a difficult first winter.

However, it wasn’t an annual tradition until much later. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, various colonies and states held their own days of thanksgiving to celebrate harvests or victories. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday to be observed on the last Thursday of November, aiming to unite the country.

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation officially setting Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November, where it remains today.
