We’re back with another DeMYTHstify Monday!

Myth or Fact: Hospice hastens death.

MYTH: Hospice seeks neither to lengthen life nor to hasten death. Our approach is to allow nature to take its course, and to bring comfort, support, and peace to the patient and the family. Interestingly, many studies have shown that patients on hospice may actually live longer because their symptoms are being appropriately managed.

There are many myths out there surrounding hospice that hinder people from utilizing our resources so we thought we would tackle the feat of debunking these myths by kicking off a brand new series called DeMYTHstify Monday! Every Monday, we will address a common hospice myth.

Myth or Fact: Hospice means giving up hope

MYTH: Hospice is a re-defining of hope. While the hope for a cure may no longer be possible, hospice can provide the opportunity to have quality of life, live each day to the fullest, and experience a peaceful and meaningful life closure.

May is and in observance of this important topic, a group of our HCH social workers had the opportunity to attend the “Community Defined Best Practices for Latino Communities: Prevention, Treatment and Wellness” conference last week. While there, they were honored to meet Congresswoman Grace Napolitano of the 31st Congressional District of California, who has spearheaded efforts to secure funding for mental health services.
