The Institute's goal, under the leadership of founder Steven Angel, is to bring the benefits of drumming to schools, juvenile justice facilities, cancer and addiction rehabilitation centers. Steven created the Reading and Rhythm Program as a powerful strategy to address the needs of struggling readers. The universal appeal of rhythm makes Reading and Rhythm stand out from other reading strategies.
The Reading and Rhythm program connects the fight response in the amygdala part of the brain to the intellect of the frontal cortex. By redirecting the fight spirit to the intellect we are empowering kids to fight for an education. Maurice Elias, Rutgers University psychology professor feels, “…that when you looked at the literature on education reform, it’s replete with failure. And the missing piece is social and emotional learning.”

READ OR GO TO JAIL. Building new jail cells: So strong is the link between literacy and being a useful member of society that states use grade-level reading statistics as a factor in projecting future prison construction. A stunning 40% of America's 4th graders continue to read below the basic level. These numbers are even bleaker in the inner cities and poor rural areas, where 68% of low-income 4th graders cannot read at a basic level.
