Warren High Career Technical Education

Today we were fortunate to host the newly launched career pathway program at Warren High School.

The program, led by former Fire Chief Dan Hurlock, provides students an Intro to a Fire Science course which is the perfect first step. In this hands-on class, students get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to become a firefighter.

Thanks to Capt. Josh Halbmaier, Eng. Zipperian, FF/PM Solis and FF/PM Orens for their time and mentorship.

Auxiliary Tower

Today wrapped up three intensive days of training for our newest Auxiliary Firefighters.
Under the leadership of our Auxiliary Coordinator, Engineer Chris Bayley, the newest members of the DFD trained on ground ladders, communications, hose lines, and apparatus review and inventory.

Look out for Auxiliary Jackson Ivie, Kyle Hinatenko, and Gavin Rossi on a fire engine near you.

A special thank you to the on-duty crews and off-duty personnel who made this training happen.

Region Wide Multi Agency Training;

Recently we collaborated with our operational partners to ensure Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) compatibility.
The SCBA is one of the most critical components of the personal protective ensemble as it protects our respiratory system and enables us to operate in smoke-filled, toxic environments.
Ensuring our equipment is compatible with other agencies and SCBA manufacturers is crucial to enabling us to work in hostile environments and to guaranteeing our safe return home.

Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) Training:

Your Downey Fire Department TEMS Paramedic Firefighters participated in a K-9 trauma care class hosted by the Arcadia Police Department. Training to care for K-9 officers included injuries from both human and natural causes. Collaboration and partnership with regional fire and police agencies help keep your fire department well prepared to respond to and mitigate emergencies in our community.

Today, a ceremony was held in memory of the fallen from that horrific attack that occurred on September 11th 2001. Although this event occurred 24 years ago, the memories are fresh. We are grateful for the support of the community, City Staff, and City Council. We will #343

Honoring those lost on September 11, 2001

Today mark‘s 24 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Members of your Downey Fire Department joined firefighters across the country to pay tribute to the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority officers, and innocent civilians in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and on board the aircrafts used in the attacks. Assending our 4 story drill tower 37 times, we climbed the equivalent of 110 stories, the hight of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.

In solidarity and support, we honor the fallen, yet never forgotten.

Continuing Education

Last week, two of our members, Firefighter/Paramedic David Molina and Firefighter/Paramedic Marcos Salas-Franco, attended a Structure Collapse Specialist course at the Rio Hondo Regional Training Center.

Maintaining and developing our Urban Search and Rescue skills is one of the many technical rescue skills we are obligated to maintain as we are part of Regional Task Force 2.
