1. 🐣🐥🪺🪺 Early identification matters.

2. See the Tests of Dyslexia to learn how every single ✏️school can now diagnose dyslexia.

3. Did you know WPS - Western Psychological Services has been helping people with 🎯early identification for 75 years?

4. Imagine a time when dyslexia is identified in preschool or kindergarten around the 🌍world.

5. Too many schools incorrectly told parents that help was not available until 2nd to 4th grade. The new Tests of Dyslexia will improve this outdated myth. The “ earlier-the-better” has now replaced the outdated “ wait-to-fail” which failed way too many kids.

6. Did you know the International Dyslexia Association has offered help to any educator who is motivated to learn more for over 75 years? No one has to wait for their school job to teach them. Any educator can learn to teach dyslexic students.

7. The process to get help varies in every country. So many parents ask for help and find the system does not work at all ages.

See Decoding Dyslexia and Wrightslaw. Parents truly need to know their legal rights.

9. Too many kids slip through the cracks for a wide range of reasons. Educators and parents must look at each grade level as the demands for reading, written expression, executive functions and learning change each year of school. Stay observant.

Ask yourself “ why is this bright, creative student not working to potential ?” and look deeper. Dyslexia. Dyscalculia. Dysgraphia. Language-based learning differences. Executive functions. Working memory. Processing speed. Cognitive profiles. Learn about all of these.

10. All educators must do their own lifelong learning to have enough expertise. The science of learning is a vast body of information. It’s not new. The google search bar is 25 years old . Anyone working with kids will need to learn more outside of job-paid professional development. It’s not possible for the schools to train the teachers on all topics. Lifelong learning is a lifestyle.

11. The science of learning is available for educators at every age level. Join The Reading League and many other agencies that provide volumes of information.

12. Brain-based learning includes people with any type of learning difference. The people who already studied the past 50 years of the science of reading are the same people who also know about dyslexia.

Eventually, everyone working with children will understand that 1 in 5 kids will have some type of learning difference.

13. We will be identifying and helping all kids in need long before they enter kindergarten.

14. We will also have the knowledge, skills and desire to help kids at every age and grade as the demands and curriculum needs change.

16. Historically, the names and words used to describe learning differences change over time.

The “ medical model” requires certain words for insurance payment.

The “ educational model” uses certain words to “ qualify for” any help.

It’s time to give each child what they need most to learn. All of the words and vocabulary change and evolve. What does not change is the human desire to learn and be respected, understood, valued, supported, welcomed , educated and accepted. It’s time to stop playing with words and to do the right things.

20. Follow Sprout Labs.

Every student will feel valued, respected, understood, supported , educated and part of society.

If you work with children, you are responsible to keep up with your own lifelong learning skills.

The google search bar is now 25 years old.

Information about literacy and the science of learning has been available for over 45 years. The International Dyslexia Association is 75 years old. The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity has offered free information for over 50 years. The Learning Disabilities Association of America is celebrating 61 years of hard work.

The ERIC has close to 2 million educational resources for free. Social media has an endless supply of helpful podcasts, YouTube’s, teacher groups and free agencies. Free. Since 1962 !!

It’s understandable that knowledge was more limited in the 1920 to 1980 era. Not any more.

No profession in the world provides all information from college prep training or work-based training.

It’s up to each person to continue to learn more because it’s the right thing to do when working with children.

Learn more in 2024.
