To all of my MCAS patients: the trees are budding! If you are someone who tends to flare at change of season, consider adding your flare protocol in at this time.

Use these two rules:
1. Is it a color of the rainbow? 2. Is it alive? This way Cheetos don’t count. Phytonutrients are the chemicals that plants produce that creates their color. Our bodies know how to use those phytonutrients to keep us healthy. When we talk about nutrition there are macronutrients (carbs, protein, fats), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and phytonutrients. But to simplify, follow these two rules.

I posted this video on my personal social media over the weekend and was met with lots of support and love as well as questions of how I achieved this. I’m posting it here now side by side with my 60 minute endurance ride from yesterday. Long zone 3 intervals. And my output is SO much lower than it was this time last year and the year before when I had been tri training. I bring this up to show the effects of “where you put your energy is what you see”. Meaning, if you focus predominantly on strength training, you will get stronger, but your endurance and VO2max will adjust for not doing those endurance rides. When you focus on endurance training, your muscles will shift in this way as well. Know that all of it is good for you and our bodies are amazing just as they are. I love that we get to see the effects of our efforts. And to answer the question of a BCIM team, who’s in? If you’d like to participate in a once a week walk/run and come together as for the Doylestown races this spring, comment below and we’ll be sure to send you the details on what we’re cooking up. Can’t wait to see you outside!

Consistency over intensity.
Both are important. When you’re starting to walk a new lifestyle change the consistency of that change will matter more. Meaning, get exercise in daily. If it’s a hard day, do something calming like a walk in nature or yoga. If you wake up feeling energized and ready to get it, push some intensity that day. But the consistency of daily movement will lead to new challenges that bring the expression an expansion of Health. You will have days you just don’t feel like it, do it anyway. I promise you will see change.

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants” Michael Pollen

Morning run in Central Park with Dr. Patterson. Then back to lectures this morning with Jen Patterson, Melissa Borrero and Candice Boyer. With an amazing breakfast salad and Purity Coffee brewed in our hotel room. Eating the way we eat at home at a conference is much easier and way more fun when you have other physician friends who get excited about eating real food too.

The dream...

My dream has always been work with my patients to help them achieve their optimal health. I want you to feel not only well, but alive! Health is truly our largest asset in life. Let's face it, when we go, we aren't taking any of our possessions with us! My goal is not only to manage and improve any disease process from which you may be suffering, but to help you achieve your maximum state of well being. This will look different to each of us, as we are each unique.

At BCIM, we acknowledge the similarities and differences we all share. We consider the health of our relationships with family, friends, work, happiness, and a higher being. We provide a blend of the best in modern medicine with the many benefits of alternative medical approaches. We don't reject the advances we have made, nor do we accept alternative practices without a critical eye. We are here to stand with you, to ask the questions that ultimately lead to your personalized optimal health.

-Dr. Helstrom, DO
