Ticks are active in Utah!
We are receiving reports from clients and community members of ticks being found on pets and people. We at Draper Animal Hospital recommend tick prevention for all dogs and outdoor cats from April through October. This time recommendation is for animals remaining in this area. If traveling outside of our area, we recommend calling the hospital at 801-553-2104 to discuss if tick prevention is appropriate for your pet.
Together, we can reduce the risk of tick borne disease in our pets.

Antler chew toys for dogs cause fractured molars
Antlers have become an advertised chew toy for dogs. An internet search will demonstrate their common availability. Deer, elk, and moose antlers are sold at various sources including Costco, Chewy, and Amazon. They claim to be durable, long lasting, no splinters, and safe. Although I don't argue their durability, I will challenge their safety claim.
Antlers are not safe for your dog to chew. Antlers are extremely hard. Fully developed antlers are calcified, solid bone. Chewing on this solid bone can cause the fracturing of the tooth crown. This fracturing removes the protective enamel of the tooth, exposes the underlying soft dentin and pulp cavity, and develops tooth root abscesses. This develops into chronic infection and pain. Treatment for these broken teeth is surgical extraction.
Over the last 5 years, I have treated numerous cases of fractured molars from chewing on hard objects. Some objects include nylabones, rocks, and bones. By far the most common cause for fractured molars in my practice has been from chewing on antlers.
There are other chew toy options for our dogs that are much safer. I prefer the Kong Classic chew toys. These rubber toys come in different levels of toughness and support a safe way for pets to chew and not damage their teeth.
The picture below is from a recent case of a dog chewing on an antler and causing molar fracture. This tooth was surgically extracted.
Call 801-553-2104 to schedule an exam of your pet's teeth and discuss the best options for care.
