✨Fact: A person can (and should) use multiple forms of AAC

In fact, this is how all of us communicate already.

Gestures, spoken utterances, high tech devices, facial expressions, body language, writing, texts, low tech AAC, eye gaze, etc. all work together to build complex, rich, and meaningful communication.

We should NEVER limit an individual to one single form of AAC, regardless of what that form of AAC is. The more tools a person has in their communication repertoire, the more opportunities they have to connect.

October is AAC Awareness Month!

At UTP, we believe everyone deserves a voice, and AAC help makes that possible. AAC is an important tool for connection, learning, independence, and a meaningful life.
This month and every month we celebrate AAC, educate about AAC, and honor all of the different ways people communicate.
This month and every month we remember and uphold that communication is a basic human right.

From “good morning” to “goodnight”, people are communicating all day long, including AAC users.

AAC can be used for:
▪️greeting friends and family
▪️sharing opinions
▪️ordering food
▪️fighting
▪️telling stories
▪️checking in with a loved one
▪️making a new friend
▪️advocating for your health
…..and so much more!

Communication is 24/7 and AAC helps make every moment count.

We are so grateful for the kind words shared by one of our incredible families:

“We love Ashley! She is patient, kind and makes learning a new communication system fun for my daughter. She has gotten her to buy in and want to use her device where before she would just shove it out of her way. She now knows her voice has power.”

We love to hear about people learning how much power their voice holds!

At Unified Therapy Partners, we believe in empowering every voice — and it’s an honor to walk alongside families on their communication journey.

Let’s talk about increasing participation at restaurants.

What usually happens when we are out to eat with friends or family?

We look at the menu, we place our order, and we have conversations with the people at our table throughout the meal.

What happens when individuals with complex communication needs go out to eat with friends or family?

Usually, it looks like someone else ordering for them, the waiter or waitress talking to someone else instead of them, exclusion from conversations at the table.

How do we bridge that gap? Some ideas include:

▪️reviewing the menu ahead of time/adapting the menu
▪️letting the individual with complex communication needs interact with the waiter or waitress to order their own food
▪️having BOTH parties (both the individuals with complex communication needs AND their communication partners) practice and use different strategies to engage in meaningful conversations

Sometimes we forget it’s not only about learning the language or learning the communication function.
Sometimes we forget it’s not only about providing an AAC device or teaching executive functioning skills.
Sometimes we forget it’s not only about teaching many different modalities of communication or educating communication partners and community members.
It’s all part of a bigger picture. It’s about what all of those skill lend themselves to: meaningful connections with friends, family, acquaintances, and community members… and the joy those meaningful connections bring to all involved.

What do individuals usually do while reading?
Choose a book, turn pages, read the pages, read along with someone else, talk about what they have read or seen within the book, etc.

We want to make sure complex communicators are provided the same opportunities to participate in those ways as well.

🗣️Adults require AAC too

So often we find the adult population is overlooked for AAC evaluations and interventions, and this could be for a number of reasons: decreased services and funding within the adult population, the false assumption that someone is too old to learn something new, the excuse that “AAC was tried before when they were a child but it didn’t work then so it won’t work now”…..

The truth is that anyone who cannot meet 100% of their communication wants & needs through spoken utterances alone requires AAC, and this includes adults.

Nobody is ever too old to learn something new.
Just because AAC didn’t work before as a child, doesn’t mean it should be written off for the rest of their lives.

Everyone (including adults) deserves the right to communicate fully.
