Hepatitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the liver, which plays a vital role in filtering toxins, aiding digestion, and storing nutrients. While hepatitis can be caused by non-viral infections and stem from alcohol, medications, or autoimmune disorders, the most common forms result from viral infections. There are five primary hepatitis viruses; Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. While all under the same principal, how each can be obtained and their effect on the Liver is vastly different. So, what makes them different from one another?

Between January and May 2025, over 2,000 hepatitis A cases have been reported across Austria, Czechia, Hungary, and Slovakia, with Slovakia accounting for 880 cases and Czechia reporting 600 cases and six deaths. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a rapid risk assessment due to the spike, which has affected travelers and local populations alike.
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious viral liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), mainly spread through contaminated food or water, or close contact with infected individuals. People most at risk include those who are homeless, use recreational drugs, live in unsanitary conditions, or lack access to healthcare. The disease is particularly severe in adults over 40 and individuals with pre-existing liver conditions or compromised immune systems.
Symptoms may include fatigue, fever, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, and pale stools. However, not everyone infected will show symptoms. The ECDC notes that unvaccinated individuals or those who haven’t had the disease before are most vulnerable. Vaccination, which involves two doses administered six to 12 months apart, provides lifetime immunity.
To combat the outbreak, the ECDC recommends identifying transmission sources such as potential foodborne vectors and implementing targeted vaccination programs and post-exposure prophylaxis. They also emphasize the importance of hygiene education, improved sanitation, and broader awareness among at-risk groups.
This outbreak highlights the ongoing need for public health preparedness, especially in areas with poor hygiene and healthcare access, and reinforces the value of proactive vaccination strategies.

UV Safety Month is a time to raise awareness about the harmful effects of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and promote steps to protect skin and eyes from damage. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer. By taking simple precautions, such as wearing sunscreen, hat/sunglasses to protect the face, and staying in shade during peak hours, we can enjoy the outdoors safely while reducing their risk of UV-related health issues!

Melanoma is a visible form of skin cancer that, when detected early, is often treatable. As the most common cancer globally, early detection is key to improving outcomes. The Skin Cancer Foundation launched the Destination Healthy Skin program in May 2023 to offer free skin cancer screenings and education. Since then, volunteer dermatologists have provided 32,000 free screenings, identified nearly 13,000 potential cancers and precancers (including 615 suspected melanomas), and reached over 109,000 people with educational materials and sun protection products. The program is free, accessible, and especially valuable for individuals without access to or unable to afford dermatological care.
At Health Information Alliance, we understand the importance of Melanoma and all other different types of cancers across the field. Our Oncology Data Services and Registries are equipped to handle cancers of each stage and to ensure accurate, reliable data abstraction of clinical cancer data registries. We have been operating for over 30 years and are experienced with Performance Improvement Initiatives services.
