Real Talk Episode 4: “What The FAFSA?!”

The FAFSA changes are HERE, and they’re about to shift the entire landscape for students pursuing Social Work, OT, Speech Pathology/Therapy, Audiology, Nursing/NPs, PA, and PT degrees.

Starting July 1, 2026, these programs will be classified as “non‑professional degrees,” meaning thousands of students, especially first‑gen, low‑income, and BIPOC students, may receive less federal financial aid than ever before.

But don’t panic. Let’s prepare. Let’s pivot. And let’s make sure our communities get the information they deserve.

In this episode, we break down:
🔥 What the reclassification actually means
🔥 How it affects grad students (current + future)
🔥 Funding options beyond FAFSA
🔥 Ethical ways to explore private loans
🔥 Scholarships, stipends, & grants to look for
🔥 Why mentorship matters more than ever — especially for Black, Brown, and underrepresented students in the healing professions

Your dreams are still valid, still possible, and still worth fighting for.

Tap in, share with a future clinician, and let’s get into the real.

Revolutionary Perspectives, LLC is growing!

Hi, my name is Dr. Denise Watkins, and I recently graduated from Widener University’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.). As a Philadelphia native deeply committed to community wellness, I'm excited to embark on this next chapter of my professional journey.

My clinical approach is rooted in a psychodynamic relational framework, as I believe that meaningful, healing relationships are central to therapeutic growth. I also integrate techniques from CBT, DBT, ACT, and motivational interviewing, always maintaining a person-centered, empowerment-focused, and trauma-informed lens. My aim is to understand the whole person—their context, identity, and lived experience. I am passionate about building strong therapeutic alliances to help clients explore their goals, needs, and pathways to healing.

During my training, I've worked with individuals aged 14 to 65 across diverse settings, including college counseling, community mental health, assessment, case management, and trauma-focused care, in both individual and group formats.

As I begin my professional journey, I am particularly interested in supporting individuals in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities, where my roots are.

Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to learn more about my work or discuss how we can support each other in serving our community.

Dr. Watkins is now accepting clients virtually!

New Series Alert, thanks to our lovely intern - Think Tank Thursdays - where we work through our thinking that may no longer fit!

This week we're starting with the process of unlearning as a whole. We all get to places in life where previously held beliefs just aren't cutting it! Whether we've changed or the belief has been disproven, sometimes we hold on to them longer than we should. And the process of releasing previously rooted information is considered unlearning.

These slides walk through: identifying where the belief came from, thinking about it's impact, giving it voice by stating the process, and accessing the power of accountability.

Give this a try and let us know how it lands with you!

On my birthday, I received this beauty in the mail. I'm still speechless. Thank you to the two wonderful angels, the ED of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and past President for the nomination.

My whole life I’ve been a leader. Tried to run from it. Lead in silence, from the back or behind the scenes. Even when I was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. my alias was L.I.D. - Leader In Disguise. I enjoy leading and tend to operate from a person centered perspective.

I believe the best way to grow something is to invest in the people who are doing the things. Grow them. Nurture them. Hear them. Feed them. Affirm them. And they will go out and do amazing work. The fact that this was recognized here in my early career by Division 31 of is beyond comprehension.

I lead with my gut. I'm sure it's informed by a ton of knowledge gathered over the years. And it's my gut. The greatest compliment ever received by trainees and staff I support is that they would follow my gut to the ends of the earth. 🤗

I look forward to this mid career professional life, and continued leadership and learning in whatever capacity I'm blessed with. I'm grateful for the opportunity.

I feel like I rarely do this, and as one of the individuals leading Chester Community Coalition I'd be remiss if I didn't share the current fundraising effort we have going on. We are an organization committed to providing wholistic support, including therapeutic support and case management to those impacted by gun violence.

I have had the honor and privilege of leading an organization in its interim period, that is committed to ending gun violence and the ripple effects it can have for Chester City and the surrounding Delaware County. Government support is not always consistent, and caring individuals like you can help people who benefit most from our services to access them, and fund the organization to hire staff to best support them.

Today is Delco Gives, and I'm asking as many who can to donate an amount that they have capacity to. Every contribution is helpful to the efforts we are making toward eliminating gun violence.

You can donate online here at: https://www.delcogives.org/organizations/chester-community-coalition-a-project-of-urban-affairs-coalition

Thank you for your consideration, and for the role you've played in helping us accomplish the work!
